Musings on a New Month

February 1st. I think many of us are quite happy January is over. Unless you are a reader from more tropical zones or the southern hemisphere (Hi Joanne!) I’d say the words that best sum up January are “freakin’ brrrrrrr!”

As a friend so eloquently posted on my Facebook timeline:

We were treated temperatures above 40 degrees F today, so that was a nice change. Rumors are we could see 50 tomorrow! Woo-to-the-hoo!

Oh, I finished the taxes and the FAFSA today. Accomplishment!!

February. What else. Meghan’s 19th birthday will be arriving at the end of this month. How very strange it will be not to have her home on this day.

After a conversation with friends at a little get together last weekend, I’ve been experimenting with smoothies. Remember when I told you I’m trying to get close to 100 grams of protein daily? I’ve started adding vanilla-flavored whey protein to a couple things. I’m putting it in oatmeal for breakfast (quite yummy actually) and a scoop goes into the smoothie along with yogurt, ice, milk, and whatever fruit I have handy. Last night I snuck a few leaves of spinach into it and offered to share with Sarah. She never even suspected the spinach was in there.

Would have been prettier if I’d thought to take the picture before I drank the smoothie…

Speaking of Sarah, here’s a funny snippet of conversation we had this week:
Sarah: Mom, when is the Super Bowl?
Me: This Sunday, why? (Sarah is NOT a football fan)
Sarah: Oh does that mean junk food????

Last year, all 4 of us were home for Super Bowl Sunday. Hubby had the day off from work and Meghan didn’t have plans to be out with the boyfriend. This year it will just be Sarah and me. We are not big football people, and could care less about the two teams playing this year (my apologies if any Seattle fans are reading. No apologies for Denver fans, however, because if you are from New England it is pretty much required that you not like Peyton Manning.) but Super Bowl seems like a good excuse to eat in the living room, have nachos and chicken fingers (buffalo flavored for me!), and watch some funny commercials.

Good football watching!

I’m still hoping to get re-inspired for photography again soon. I’m seeing some good ideas around the blogosphere and I thank those blogging friends for the thoughts. Mike of Picture Day shared his list of photo projects recently. And Amy of PlainMama referenced an interesting sounding photo group on Flickr: The Hours.
If anyone else has some good ideas for getting out of a photo slump, I’d love to hear about them.

  1. Yep! Super Bowl Sunday is just for the commercials! I gave up on football after Buffalo lost 4 in a row. Haven’t watched it since except for the great advertisements… šŸ™‚

    • This year’s Budweiser commercial, which has already been out on Good Morning America, is another great one.

  2. LOL your Sarah and my Sara would get along great! Mine’s always looking forward to Stupid Bowl Sunday because of the food (meat & cheese platter, veggie platter, chips & pretzels & dip….and the dip is for the veggies, too). I’m not even going to suffer through the Stupid Bowl for the commercials and will look them all up online tomorrow šŸ˜‰
And yeah, on needing photography inspiration. Thankfully I’m good for at least a couple of weeks, but I need to work on a list of ideas as well. I told Mike on his blog post that I’ll post my list….and will do that later this month. Maybe there’ll be something on there for you, too.

    • I’m definitely in a photo slump. I’ve barely picked up my camera since Christmas. I’ll be looking forward to seeing your list. I think I’ll throw some veggies into the food mix tonight too, but it is unlikely that my Sarah will touch them, lol.

      • Mine will eat raw veggies (some of them anyway), especially with ranch dip, but I’ll have to force them to eat cooked veggies.

  3. Not a football fan here either. So every year I go to the movies and watch something husband wouldn’t want to go see. This year I think I’m going to watch Nebraska. Not that he wouldn’t go with me to see that one, but I know we just won’t get around to it before it’s out of theaters.

As for photography…I’m enjoying the weekly photo challenge from WordPress…sometimes I can get to them, sometimes not…but it’s all fun!

    • I’m pretty sure I’m signed up to receive the weekly photo challenges from WordPress too, but I don’t always remember seeing them every week. I should probably pay better attention and be on the lookout for them!

  4. I’m not a football fan either, but use the excuse for junk food. I’m looking forward to some nachos. As for photography inspiration, I keep shooting through the doldrums. Most of it’s crap, but sometimes I get an occasional good one. Maybe it’s time for one of your famous (and fun!) photo hunts. šŸ˜€

    • Well, Robin, you sure post a lot of beautiful shots for someone who shoots a lot of “crap” – lol!
A photo hunt! There’s a thought. I don’t think I’ve done one since last June. I’ll give it some thought and see if I can come up with an interesting theme.

      • lol! Since I’m in a new place, the inspiration hasn’t run dry yet. But when I do get a good case of the photography doldrums, I find it helps to just shoot whatever even if it means deleting most (or sometimes all) of it. There are thousands of pictures of the cats or faucet drips that never see the light of day. lol! Speaking of faucet drips, maybe an “around the house” theme would be something to consider since it’s February and still cold and gray in a lot of places.

  5. Football. Not for me. Now Curling — THAT is a fun sport and I will watch that. But I think you have to have played it to “get” it. That SuperBowl stuff even takes over the airwaves up here … sigh … Good luck with your “slump” … how about an alphabet challenge ? Picture of something starting with “A” then “B” … etc.

    • Hmmm….between you and Robin, it sounds like there could definitely be the making of something interesting to help get us through the “cold gray bucket of suck” lol!

  6. Grinning about those stages of winter. The only thing I would add is another picture of snow in April and how TIRED we are of it by then! (Or May…) We didn’t watch the Super Bowl, well, don’t have a TV anyway. Did check the score at half time on my Kindle. Bet most of my extended family was watching it, though. Good luck getting those creative juices going! It’s always toughest this time of year, doesn’t it seem?

    • Luckily there isn’t too much snow in April in these parts. I think you live just a little too far north Kathy, lol!
How nice that I have such blogging friends that maybe those creative juices will flow once again… idea formulating right now. šŸ™‚

  7. […] know what? You blogger-readers are pretty darn awesome. I mean that. In my last post, I lamented my lack of inspiration photographically as of late. Helpful people that you are, many […]
