Well Dam, I think I just came up with a photo hunt!

I went back to Conant Brook Dam today. It was an unseasonably warm 50 degrees outside. I decided today was a good day for a quick walk after school. We have had a bit more snow and a lot of rain since I last went there – 10 days ago it was sunny and frozen. Today it was gray and muddy, and as you can see in the photo above, foggy. I converted this to black and white, but in all honesty, it wasn’t a huge change.

As I strolled along, I noticed the spot where I stopped and took a bunch of shots during my last visit. I took out my phone and took a shot of a similar view to one of the ones from January 15th, also converted to black and white:

It was then that the idea for a photo assignment bubbled to my mind. Back in the day, our friend Scott over at Views Infinitum, proposed the idea for a long term assignment involving taking a photo of the same location for all 4 seasons. But that’s too long to wait, isn’t it? Look at how mine changed in just 10 days. Here’s an idea: Before and After. Take or find a photo, any photo, and show me your before and after. It can be weather related, design related … ooooh, cooking related? Just like I used to say, rules are loosey-goosey. Interpret how you’d like. But how about we make this a two-fer? I still like the 4 seasons assignment even though many of us already did it; I’m not opposed to a re-do. I am proposing “before and after” for now, AND start now working on the 4 seasons assignment. It’s the middle of winter here in the northern hemisphere, summer for our Australian friend. Take a shot now of a scene you can return to 3 more times this year. I’ll post reminders as the seasons pass to collect your next photo, then when autumn arrives here in the north, and spring in the southern hemisphere, we can each post our 4 photos. Want to play? Let’s say February 5th for a due date for Before and After. Let me know in the comments if you are interested. I added a link over on the right side bar that says “Photo Assignment posts” with a link to this post so that you can easily get back here to leave me your links or pingbacks to your post for this photo hunt. Happy hunting!

  1. Oooh, a photo assignment 🤗. Now to think of something 🤔
Might even do the four seasons one if I use the picture I took of my house last time we got snow (which was just a few weeks ago).
Your foggy picture is really cool, love it when the fog / mist hangs above the water.

  2. I like your idea and have been thinking about doing something like that, too. Will try to find a good spot by February 5th! Your black and white photos perfectly capture the stark beauty of winter’s moods.

    • You don’t have to find your “good spot” by February 5th – just by the end of winter if you want to do the long-term 4 seasons photo assignment. For February 5th I’m thinking of anything “before and after” – a nature scene is lovely, but it could also be for example a flower open and then faded, or the scene in your kitchen before and after cooking, or a room before the family comes home and gets comfy and after… feel free to be creative!

  3. Fun!!! Wonderful, Karma! Thank you. It’s been a while since I’ve played with a good photo assignment. I enjoyed Scott’s four season challenge and will likely give that a go. In the meantime, I’ll ponder a good before and after. 🙂

  5. And cool B&W scenes… Looks like someone is coming around on this style.

    • Thank you. B&W has its place. And Lightroom sure makes easy work of creating them.

  6. I loved your photo challenges back in the day…I still remember finding belted cows very unexpectedly for one of your challenges. Before and After….hmmmmm…that will take some thought. I DID do a 4 season series once, a long time ago, of a field I drove past often. I’m glad I did that because that field is now covered in farm equipment and doesn’t look at all beautiful anymore. I’ve thought of a couple places that might be pretty in 4 seasons…of course it has to be somewhere I can get easily…and my first choice would take some effort…would I make that effort 4 times? Hmmmm again…

    • I still love belted galloway cows! And I still refer to them as “Oreo cows” lol. You could do your own back yard in 4 seasons if you’d like! Looking forward to seeing what you do.

      • I found it! It was for June of 2011! Wow, 13 and half years ago. The belted cows were a bonus shot for that month’s scavenger hunt, lol!

        Comment by Karma — February 1, 2024 @ 6:08 pm

      • Belted cows were June of 2011? No way! I think, whatever the challenge was, I did it at the Detroit Zoo and found something for everything, but had no inkling I’d pass a farm exhibit on the way out of the zoo, and that there would be BELTED COWS there!!! Perfect! That was so much fun!

    • I remember the belted cows too! That goes back aways.

  7. I’m in – I love the idea! ❤️
During winter I built a new rockery garden, on a slope just in front of my house. I took photos in spring, just after I added the plants, and because I planted them all before the summer heat kicked in it gave their roots time to become accustomed to their new home while it was cooler weather. I plan on taking more photos each season as well, so my rockery garden is perfect for this challenge. 😊
Great idea, Karen, and I look forward to following along with everyone else who joins the challenge.

    • Sounds perfect Joanne! Are you in for the before and after challenge as well? I bet with the visits from your grandchildren you could find some easy before and after shots!

      Comment by Karma — January 27, 2024 @ 8:02 am | Reply

      • I will be, if I can find a “before” photo! I’m not sure what photos I’ve taken of the area where the new rockery is, but I’m pretty sure I have some. 🙂

  8. Not an assignment that I will participate in, but whew … that place looks cold. Where are you located? I’m in Cincinnati, except for snowbird season. Thanks for stopping by. Robin and I go way back in blog time … and Joanne and Barbara visiting me now.

    • I thought that I might’ve remembered “A Frank Angle” that you mention in your “about” information. Probably saw it “back in the day’. This month marked my return to blogging after a 7 year hiatus, and Robin’s blog was always a regular visit for me. I’m in western Massachusetts and it is my goal to be a snowbird when I retire – that’s probably at least 10 years away for me.

      Comment by Karma — January 28, 2024 @ 9:59 am | Reply

      • I had A Frank Angle for over 11 years … and ended it’s run with a long reflection and celebration. It was time …. but all along I sensed I would reappear here, which I did 9 months later. Robin is a gem! … and thanks for letting me know western Mass. 🙂

  10. This old brain isn’t sure it understands – are we to post “before” and “after” photos now, or just let you know if we’re interested in participating in four-season posts? I remember having a great time when you did your photo challenges so long ago.

    Comment by Carol — January 30, 2024 @ 6:02 pm | Reply

    • Hi Carol. My idea is actually 2 photo hunts. Before and After for now – of anything of your choosing, not necessarily seasons related. It could be before and after your kitties have left their fur all over something if you wanted lol! The four seasons one is long term. If you’d like to participate just take a photo of a place you can easily return to in all 4 seasons and post about them this fall. Does that help?

      Comment by Karma — January 31, 2024 @ 5:17 pm | Reply

      • Thank you so much! Yes, this clears it up for me. I’ll do the before and after post, then decide what I want to do for the four season post.

    • It looks like my post has arrived here before me, Karma, as a pingback! I went down a rabbit-hole of discovery the other day and found more photos than I imagined I had. Talk about a walk down memory lane! I will take a new “summer” photo soon, as most of the plants shown in my post have already grown. 🙂

  14. […] Karma has offered us a photo hunt challenge. I first met her several years ago when she offered different photo challenges, one of which called for a belted cow – and I was able to find one! This is a mini-challenge, calling for before and after photos. I haven’t been getting out of the house to take photos a lot lately – I seem to slow down a bit more each year – but I did find two that seemed to fit the bill. […]
