Guess what? It’s another snow day!

Looks like I called it right in my last post. I thought maybe you’d hear from me on another snow day, and here we are. Between the Martin Luther King holiday and snow days we’ve had, I’ve been to school on Monday only twice in 2015. And next week is February break from school, so perhaps February 23rd will be my next Monday at work.

In this post from a January snow day, I was playing with the lenses for my iPhone and I showed you my front yard with bird bath visible. Have a look at where the snow is on that bird bath now:
Snow piling up

Speaking of lenses, I was rather happy on Saturday morning when I thought I was going to get a great deal from B&H Photo on that lens I’ve had my eye on, the Canon 85mm 1.8. I received a notification from Canon Pricewatch that there was a used one available from B&H. I quickly went to their site and found it still available. I put it in my cart. Now B&H does not process web orders from Friday night until Saturday evening. According to the timer on the site, shopping checkout would be available again around 6:45pm. I left the site open all day and checked that the lens was still in my cart. I returned to start checkout around 6:50pm and the lens was gone from cart! I don’t understand this facet of doing business. Why was another customer allowed to buy something I had placed in the cart? Were multiple customers allowed to place the same item in their carts and the first one back to pay for it, gets it? If I had known that was the story, I would’ve been at the ready minutes before the checkout opened. I guess now I know better if I try again. Needless to say I was hugely disappointed.

Back to the snow day. Icicles are getting big
Icicles getting long

and temperatures are staying small.

Birds have rediscovered my feeding area, enjoying what the squirrels leave behind. I found a cute little downy woodpecker on a suet cake yesterday.

But boy let me tell you, cabin fever is hitting me hard. Sarah just got back from Florida, my sister is on a cruise as we speak, and I know teacher-friends will be taking off for warm climes during the February break. I’ve been trolling Expedia daydreaming about making my escape. Anyone have any tips for scoring a great deal?

  1. If you find any FREE trips on Expedia let me know, coz that’s the only way I’ll get to escape this hellish damn winter.

  2. I was telling my friend in New York this morning that I think this year your half of the country is getting all of the snow that is normally spread across the whole country. Today the sun is battling the clouds, giving me hope. Tomorrow it is to be in charge – for which I am grateful because I am in desperate need of some Serotonin!

    • The sun….I seem to remember hearing about that thing some time ago…..it glows brightly in the sky and provides light and warmth, right? 😉

      • That’s what they say. There were glimpses of it today, but not long enough to raise my serotonin levels sufficiently.

  3. Sorry to hear about the lens Karma. And yes, first come first serve even if it is in your cart. You should also check out Adorama. They might have a used or refurbished lens for you. Another site to try is KEH. Good luck.

    • Thanks for the tips Mike. I was especially excited about trying to get the lens from B&H because I recently discovered I have $48 left on an old gift card for them. Every little bit helps, right?

  4. Wow those icicles are huge! Now they saying considerable snow for Thursday into Friday! Can’t stand it! I have been putting out lots of black sunflower seeds and unsalted peanuts for the furry and feathered friends. I feel so bad for them.
I don’t know they site you are talking about but I don’t understand either if something is in your shopping cart.

      • Enough is enough on this dang snow already! Since we are up to #4, if we get many more snow days, I wonder if they will dig into April break. I need to find a way to get me some sun!!!!!

  5. Wow! And wow! You really ARE snowed in. The icicles are amazing. I’m sorry about the lens. That’s a good thing to know for when I decide to go shopping for the lens I want. First I have to figure out what lens I want. 🙂

    • Meant to add that the downy woodpecker is really cute. They hide in the marsh grasses here, pecking at the dried grass stalks, so it’s hard to get a good view of one, much less a photo.

      • Thanks Robin. Suet cakes are great for getting birds to pose for the camera for a little while! Especially up here where its so dang cold and snowy, I think the suet is especially attractive to them.
I’m sure another used lens will come along, it just seems they are snapped up very quickly from the B&H site, which is where I’d really like to buy from since I have a $48 credit. Then I waffle and think I maybe I should get a new one and not worry about it and then I think maybe I shouldn’t buy a lens at all, and put all the money I might think of spending toward my ESCAPE to the sun! Being in my head is a confusing place to be somedays, lol!

  6. Almost 2 months in and only 2 Monday’s at work!!?… You do realise that eventually there will be payback. Lol. Karma an all that. 😉

    • Funky Slug! Hello! Nice to hear from you.
Yes, the payback will be in the form of being stuck in school later in June while the weather outside is delightful. I am certainly not a fan of all these snow days.

  8. Karma, cabin fever is hitting me hard too. So I totally understand this post! May you stay warm and steadfast during these winter days.

    • Hi there Kathy. Cabin fever has me dreaming about escape! I’ve even been looking at the cost of air fare to get away for a weekend to see the Red Sox in spring training down in Ft. Myers Florida. It is pretty awful what they charge for flights to Florida this time of year.
