Sometimes It’s the Little Things

You can feel it in the air. You can see it in the light. You can hear it in the heat bugs. Summer is in its downward spiral.

Kate was saying it too. It seems strange to be thinking this way when we are still in the single digits of August, but the end is much nearer than I’d like it to be.

We leave for Maine for our annual week’s vacation on Hills Beach this Saturday. When we return, time is going to fly. Meghan moves into her dorm only 2 weeks from today. School begins again for me on Monday the 26th.

In the little time that I have left, I’m trying to remember to enjoy the little things, like the little visitors to the area of my backyard deck.

All of these little ones appeared just yesterday.

What I believe to be a juvenile ruby throated hummingbird(according to what I’ve read it is difficult to tell the females from the juveniles)

Can you see him (or her) sitting on the other side of the feeder? Here’s another shot with the head tipped back and a wing out for balance.

I thought the bee in the background was kind of neat too.

While I sat with my current summer read (Under the Dome by Stephen King – have you read this one? Excellent so far!) I noticed a hopping motion out of the corner of my eye.
This tiny visitor was making its way across my deck:

It occured to me that there was no frame of reference for just how tiny this little guy is in the photo, so I grabbed a dime and quietly slid it over to where it was sitting, hoping it wouldn’t decide to hop away before I took this picture:

This will likely be my last post before we leave for Maine. I’ve got my fingers crossed for nice weather. We may have wi-fi available during this trip, so I may check in with you from time to time during the week and on Facebook if we are friends there.

“..you feel it in the air, summer’s (not quite!) out of reach…” Extra points if you can name the song I’m paraphrasing in the comments without googling it! 😉

  1. Before school starts for me, I am trying to finish up all those summer projects on my “to-do” list that did not get done. But, mostly, I am trying to let myself do all the things I get frustrated about not being able to do once school starts … like sitting outside with a book and leisurely mornings with a cup of coffee.

I have been attempting to get some good pictures of hummingbirds, too … this has been my biggest August challenge 😉

    • Outside with a book and leisurely mornings with coffee – two of my favorite things about summer too!

  3. I too have been feeling that precursor of fall in the air the past few days. It’s early, and we could have another round of heat but somehow I don’t think so. Enjoy your time in Maine -look forward to seeing photos, of course!

    • Thanks Carol. I don’t know how many pictures I’ll return with, but I’m sure there’ll be a post of some sort. 🙂

  4. Not sure about the song (I’d have to google it and that would be cheating). Love your little frog visitor. I was wondering about summer winding down, too. Not that the weather here is any indication, but I did see birds starting to flock together and thought, “Already?” Not being a fan of summer, I don’t mind if it leaves. I know you love it, though, so I hope your summer slows down and stretches out for you. Have a delightful vacation! (Wish I was going back to Maine. It’s a beautiful state.) 🙂

    • Thanks very much Robin. I’m afraid there’s no way summer has any intention of slowing down around here! Even if the temperatures remain summer-like for a while to come, once school begins again it is really over for me!

  5. Don Henley’s ‘Boys of Summer’… Huge Eagles and Henley fan. Great images of the critters. Enjoy your vacation in Maine!

    • Ding, ding, ding! Extra points for Mike, lol! And great taste in music I must say! I love Henley and the Eagles too.
      Thank you!

  6. Hill’s Beach? We’ll be in Portland Saturday through Monday. Sunday afternoon we’re spending at Old Orchard Beach, just up the coast from you! On Monday we’re heading inland to New Hampshire and then Burlington, VT. We’ll end up in Lake George on Weds/Thurs, then home again next weekend.
LOVE your photos. What a tiny little frog!
If Mike hadn’t have posted it first, I knew immediately what song you were quoting from.
Have a really nice vacation … as will I. Can’t wait to see pics when you get back!

  7. I’ve been feeling summer winding down too. I try not to look at the burning bush with the blush of red, or that maple tree over there turning slightly yellow. Or the fact I put a sweater on in early morning when the dog and I go out. Nope. Not. Going. To. Notice. It. No, not me. Not yet.

Have a WONDERFUL family trip! Should be just amazing. Have fun!

  8. Karma, you must be off on your trip now. I sure you and your family have a good time–surely you will! Hopefully the weather is warm enough (but not too hot) up in Maine. Enjoyed looking at your pics and breathing the summer air. May summer last at least another month in all our neck of the woods…

    • Thank you Kathy. I am home now. The weather was pleasant – I wouldn’t have minded a little warmer temps and a little less wind, but beach-going-beggars can’t be choosers, right? I have lots of pictures to sort through as well as things to say. There will be a post or two upcoming. Going to make my way around and catch up with folks now.

  9. Please let’s not talk about summer ending. It’s too sooooooooooooooooooon ! (much wailing and gnashing of teeth).

Hope you are having a great holiday.

    • I will do my best not to dwell on summer ending. The “easy” days of summer, however, end for me very shortly – back to school a week from tomorrow. I’m hoping for warm and pleasant days to stretch at least through the end of September, to be enjoyed at the end of the school day. 🙂
Thanks Sybil. Vacation post or two, coming soon!

  10. You really can feel it in the air. When I get up at 5 am the air smells like school and feels cool. Luckily, September is one of the best months on Cape Cod..still warm, less crowds and blue sky. Can’t wait for yours and Jennifer’s visit.

  11. I forgot to say I love the pictures..as much as I hate bees I love how you caught him flying in. The dime next to the little toad is really cool. He doesn’t seem to be bothered by the dime being there.

    • Thanks, Mom. I don’t think the little toad even really noticed me approaching with the dime and the camera. Or it was trying very hard to hope I didn’t see him and that I would go away.
