More Proof!

I mentioned yesterday that it seemed like I had missed February due to the recent weather.  This morning I gained even more evidence that something seems to be wrong with the calendar.  I saw a freakin’ robin!

I almost used that for my post title today since I was so shocked.  I never see robins here until March.

I apologize for the not-great quality of these.  I had a better picture, I’m sure of it, but I messed up; I blame my pre-coffee morning brain.  Let me back up a little bit.  When I wandered out of bed this morning and opened the door to let the dogs out, I noticed this out on my deck:

It hadn’t snowed during the night, but I thought it might just be an interesting frost pattern.  Hmm, I thought to myself, maybe a chance to get the elusive frost pictures so many of us were missing from last month’s photo hunt and an opportunity to use my really neglected  extension tubes.

Bundled in my bathrobe and slippers, I went outside.  I heard birds chirping that I really thought I wouldn’t normally hear in January.  I had that thought yesterday during my walk too.  I looked around and, lo and behold, if there wasn’t a robin in my  sycamore tree.  I took the extension tubes off and clicked away at the robin.  Put the tubes back on and only then did I notice the display on my camera saying “no card”….grrrrr!  I’d left in the computer again.   Sigh!  What were the chances the robin would still be there by the time I retrieved the card?

Tromp back inside, fetch the card, take tubes off again, robin is still in tree!  Yay!  Not posed as nicely this time around, but I still have proof for my blog readers!  Now what about that frost?  Croutch down low, find focus point and… “change battery pack”  says display this time! Argh!  Couldn’t you have told me that, Andre, when I went inside to fetch the memory card?

Since I was too lazy to try to figure out how to stabilize the camera at that level (I was still pre-coffee at this point), this is the best I was able to get hand-holding with the three tubes attached:

All that before breakfast and coffee!  If that isn’t proof that I love you, dear blog readers, I’m not sure what is!  😉

By the way, this has nothing to do with the calendar being wrong, but Mr. and Mrs. C stopped by again this morning.  I waited patiently for the two of them to be close enough together to have them both in one shot, but it didn’t happen.  I did get a couple pictures that I thought were cute though.  He:

Photo Hunt Wrap Up

IMG_6989

I imagine this is how many of us may be feeling after this season of celebrations.  As we wind down 2011, I hope that 2012 brings you peace and joy.  2011 was not a wonderful year in many ways, but it had its great points too.  One of the great points for me on this blog, was starting the photo hunts.  I just love seeing all of your creativity.  October’s Idiomatic Photo Hunt was the most popular of the year.

Now I’ll bring you, in order of submission, the wrap of December’s holiday-themed photo hunt.  Not as many of you participated this time around, and I attribute that to how busy this month can be.  Thank you so much to those of you who did find the time to participate.

Nye was the first blogger in with her photo hunt.  I loved the holiday warmth in her photos, especially the “treat” shot with the Christmas lights in the background – all ready for Santa’s arrival!

Scott Thomas, provider of our bi-monthly photo assignments, was next.  Scott’s hunt had a strong Disney theme once again, and showed some of the millions of Christmas lights Disney World displays this time of year (I wonder what their electric bill is like for December???)  Scott also had to be creative with his shot for “frost” because strangely enough, there’s been a distinct lack of it here in the northeast this month.

My photo hunt  was third, and you can see it here if you missed it.

Continuing in order of submission gets a little confusing here.  If I go in the order of comments to my original blog post, Michaela is next, although her hunt published after the next few bloggers since she scheduled it to post on the due date.  It doesn’t really matter who was next as long as you go see them right?  Michaela’s hunt featured her beautiful creativity and gorgeous use of light.  Still marvelling at the fact that she was able to find pretty shots of frost down in Texas while I’ve barely had any here in Massachusetts!

Dawn’s hunt showed some really  cute and creative pictures.  The wooden reindeer cut-outs in the spotlight are very sweet and the firetruck decked in Christmas lights was a really neat sight to see!

Dawn then kindly pointed out to Ellen that it appeared she had taken plenty of shots for the photo hunt without even realizing it!  Ellen then quickly cobbled together a post for the hunt and I’m glad she did! Ellen is yet another southern blogger who was able to find a shot of frost and her pictures of the treats her family enjoyed are fabulous.

It appears that Deb was one of the few northeast bloggers who was able to get the elusive frost shot!  She took a gorgeous shot of exactly the type I was thinking of when I included frost as a photo hunt item.  You can feel the holiday joy in her collection.

Our last photo-hunter for this month was Carol.  Her Christmas card is one of the cutest I’ve seen and I’m going to take her word for it that there is actually frost in her frost picture!

I’d like to throw an invite out to everyone who had an issue with trying to take a frost picture for the hunt this month to keep your eyes open for pretty frost patterns this winter.  If you’d like to send me a link to your pictures, maybe I can do another frosty wrap up at some point this winter!

Thank you once again, everyone, for your participation in this month’s hunt.  I hope you’ll have a chance to visit all the hunts and leave the participants some comment love!  If you’d be so kind, please let me know in the comments of this post if you’d like to see the photo hunts continue in 2012 and  if you have any suggestions for improving the hunts.  Have a very happy new year!

Thanksgiving Leftovers

Twice today I had my cup of coffee interrupted by the desire to take a photo.  Desire turned to inspiration, and the blog post began composing itself in my head.

As I stood in the kitchen this morning while the Keurig brewed my first cup, I was taken in by the sparkle outside.  There was a fairly thick frost last night, and the morning sun was lighting it up as it melted.  In my flannel pants and slippers, I ventured into the backyard.

Autofocus and I disagreed yet again, so the only really focused spot in that shot is that one drop of water, but I kind of liked this in an abstract way.

While Teddy tried to engage me in game of tug-of-war with one of many fallen sticks, I was attracted to the frosted edges of this leaf:

Returning to my coffee, I discovered I must have had a defective K-cup as my cup was full of grounds! Yuck.  But it gave me the excuse to brew a fresh cup after my little outdoor excursion.

After finishing that cup, I turned to leftovers.  Jennifer kindly sent me home with a generous bag of turkey bones and meat for making soup.  Stock spent the afternoon simmering on my stove.

Even with reserving plenty of meat to fill out the soup, I had a substantial amount of turkey available for sandwiches.  MSN.com had a featured article this morning on ways to jazz up those leftover turkey sandwiches.  Hubby and I took some inspiration from it.  He popped out to the store this morning and picked up a few supplies,

and we had rather gourmet pannini style sandwiches courtesy of our George Foreman grill.

After some chores, later afternoon rolled around and I started eyeing some of those shortbread cookies I told you about on Wednesday. (I managed to snag a few to bring back home!) Another cup of coffee with a couple of cookies seemed like a perfect idea, but just I was getting ready for this afternoon snack, a sky with pink clouds beckoned me back outside (er, yep, still in those flannel pants and slippers!)

It’s too bad the power lines cross this one, but they kind of made for a neat effect with the vapor trails:

I finally got to my coffee and cookies, and sat down to write this post.

It was a relaxing, coffee, flannel pants and slippers, kind of day.  No crazy Black Friday shopping for me.  How did you spend your day-after-Thanksgiving?

“Frosty”

Today we were instructed to “visually translate the word frosty.”  Meghan wanted a Frosty from Wendy’s.  I didn’t think that would photograph all that well, and there really isn’t one very near by here.  Hubby thought I should mix up one of my famous frosty margaritas:
Electric blue margarita

Made with a splash of Blue Curacao – I guess this shot from my 365 project could actually fit the bill today.

This is the shot, however, I submitted to the gallery today:

This is a photo of ice covered snow lit by the setting sun.  I thought it had the kind of neat effect of being both warm and cool at the same time.  I got some of my inspiration for this shot from Becky Sue, who is also doing the “Picture Winter” class.  She did a very cool shot of her driveway at sunrise this morning.
