Two Hour Delay

I had absolutely no idea this morning there was any weather in the works that could call for a two hour delay to the start of school. I got in the shower at 5:30 am like I always do, and apparently shortly after that, the phone calls came in: one for the district I work in and one for the district I live in – 2 hour delay for icy roads due to some freezing rain in the wee hours.

Too wide awake to go back to bed at this point, plus I was already showered (wet hair), dressed and had put make up on by the time I discovered the calls on my cell phone. What to do? Make a cup of coffee (darn it no half n half or almond milk in the house, have to go with regular milk) and sit down to write a blog post.

That crazy-busy time of year is in full swing. Did LOTS of shopping this past weekend plus Amazon will be making regular deliveries to this house over the next few days. The tree is up.
Tree '14

I missed having Meghan around so much last year when we did the tree that this year I used “FaceTime” on our iPhones so we could have a video call while we decorated. Sarah and I picked out some ornaments for Meghan to “hang”. Here’s a couple of them:
Hers
Snowman on the left has her name on it and the one on the right is in her birthstone color. There were various others that were considered “her” ornanments and we showed them to her one by one on the phone and then pointed the phone at the tree so she could choose where to put them. It wasn’t the same as having her here of course, but it was nicer than last year when I was really feeling her absence.

Christmas time also includes regular embarrassment of my dogs:
Yearly dog embarrassment
Daphne was a good sport about it long enough for me to get a photo. Teddy was less cooperative. He had the hat off before I could focus the camera.

Remember my post where I talked about changing traditions? Two of my Christmas traditions seem to be going by the wayside this year. I don’t know if they are permanent changes or just temporary. I don’t think I will be sending Christmas cards or putting up my Christmas Village this year. I usually make photo cards with cute pictures of my daughters and dogs on them in November. Time has gotten away from me. I know it isn’t too late to make them, address them and send them out before Christmas, but I feel like it is one added “pressure” to my time these days at this point. So to any family or friends who may be reading this who normally gets a card from me, don’t feel I’ve dropped you from the list! I feel the same way about the Christmas village. It is a huge labor to set up and to take down. Perhaps I will find some space here and there around the house to display a few favorite pieces.

How is your December going so far? Holiday hustle and bustle for you?

More “-ings” of Life These Days

Back in the summer time (*sigh* it seems so very far away right now), I wrote a post called “The -ings of getting ready for vacation”. I’ve got more “ings” to share with you, of the things that are occupying my days 3 months later.

Data entering
This is the reality of education today. Government requires the collection of data to make sure that we teachers are doing our job and making sure the students are getting the common core standards. This is a screenshot showing a sample of the 1100 pieces of data I needed to enter into a program that analyzes such data.

Papers to correct
Paper correcting
I’m teaching operations with fractions these days – adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

Thinking of the future
Preparing
I really do love my current teaching position. It will be difficult when January 20th arrives and I have to hand it over to the permanant teacher. I’m planning to take the middle school math MTEL to add a math grades 5-9 certification to my other licenses and hopefully make myself more marketable as a teacher in the future.

Asian pear
Discovering
A pear for the teacher? Yup. I’m continuing on my path of better eating and fitness. I find myself scouring fresh and whole food style markets looking for different foods to enjoy. Last week I found these really delicious Asian pears that have a creamy vanilla flavor to them.

New weights
Lifting
I’ve added heavier and more frequent weight lifting to my fitness regime. That is a 15 pound kettle bell in the background, and 8 pound dumbbells in the front. The one year anniversary of my new commitment to fitness is approaching in a few days, and I am hoping to share a 1 year retrospective with you on that date.

The end of the year is rapidly approaching. Many other “ings” will soon be occupying my time and probably yours too: raking, shopping, cooking, eating, celebrating. Any “ings” that you are especially looking forward to?

Bits and Pieces

Hi there bloggers, readers, friends.  I’ve been a slackerly blogger once again.  But I have been thinking of you!  It is busy time of year for many of us, but I do hope to post from time to time this month.

I haven’t been inspired for a photo hunt this month, but I did have a group-blog idea pop into my head.  Some of you may remember this post that I did two years ago looking for dinner ideas.  There were many wonderful suggestions.  I never did put that binder of favorite recipes together like I promised myself that I would!  Anyway, the idea that I had was to ask all of you (myself included) to take pictures of what you are having for dinner for a week.  It wouldn’t matter if it was homemade or take-out, carnivorous or vegetarian – I’d still like to see it.
I even started to do it myself:

then kind of forgot about it.  So let me throw the question out to you:  Would you have any interest in photographing your dinner for a week and then doing a post afterward showing what you ate?  I thought it might be a fun way for us all to maybe get some different dinner ideas.  I’m not looking for fancy food here – unless you want to go that way.  I think it’d be great to see everyday kind of dinners.  Let me know what you think in the comments and maybe we can get a group blog-along project going, and pick a date to do it.

In other news, I have a picture of my girls to show you.

The semi-formal dance was at their high school last weekend.  It seemed like a good excuse to show you their smiling faces.

This made me smile  just the other morning.  A fiery sunrise was getting started as I was on my way out the door to work, so I grabbed a quick shot before I went out the door.

Sorry for the blur.  I was taken in by the gorgeous color and didn’t really take the time to stabilize myself before running out to the car.

It is a rainy Saturday morning as I sit here at my keyboard typing to you out there in the blogosphere.  We’re planning to brave the icky weather today to get our Christmas tree and get some more shopping done.  I’m getting there, not too much more to do.  That makes me happy since I host Christmas dinner for my family.  Once my gift shopping is done, I can focus on cleaning the house and planning for the big day.

I hope to be back at the blog later this weekend, maybe with pictures of the tree all decorated.  I plan to spend some time catching up with all of you too.  Please let me know what you think of the blog-along idea!

Slacker Blogger!

Just a quick hello from me this morning.  I have to report to you all that I feel like a big slacker!  It has been an odd week around here.  Would you believe I haven’t taken the photos for my own photo hunt (due tomorrow!) ?  I know what I want to take for photos but I just haven’t done it yet.  To those of you who have already submitted, I think you know that I prefer not to look at your hunts until I’ve completed my own, so I will need a little time before I come around to have a peek! 🙂

It was a weird week because it was supposed to be February break from school.  It was for my daughters, but not for the school district I work for.  We had to make up snow days from that crazy snow storm back in October.  I’m used to having this week off to prepare for Meghan’s birthday party, which we traditionally have on the Saturday at the end of the vacation week.  Luckily, I do have today off from work, so I’ll be using it, in addition to doing my own photo hunt, to shop and clean the house in preparation for tomorrow.

We also squeezed in our very first college visit this week, to help Meghan in her preparation for deciding which colleges to apply to.  I brought my camera along on our visit to Stonehill College in Easton, MA but decided I just didn’t feel right whipping it out as we walked through the lovely campus.  There were even swans on a little pond on the campus and the sun was low and glowing… it took a lot of my will to not stop and take pictures and keep up with the tour!

I’ve been slacking in responding to comments and commenting at your blogs too!  I hope to rectify that very soon.

Here, have some cookies to make up for my slackerliness:

Hi! I’m Still Here!

Hi everyone! I’ve missed you!  This picture has absolutely nothing to do with the contents of this post, but I wanted to show it to you because I like it. 🙂

It has been a busy week and I just felt the need to blog!  I haven’t posted since last Sunday and my fingers just insisted on typing.  Ever happen to you?

Lots going on here.  We are one week before dance recital, so I’ve put plenty of miles on the car driving the girls back and forth to the studio for extra rehearsals.    I’ve been working furiously on the project I mentioned in this post, which I can share with you after tomorrow.  And we had a wonderful visit with my nephew from California and his wife:

( I stole this picture from his Facebook page since I inconceivably forgot to take any pictures while they were here!)

I also found my stomach getting worked up in knots Thursday evening.  The weather in this area was strongly reminiscent of last Wednesday. The power went out again, but thankfully it was only strong thunderstorms this time around.  Power was back on about two hours after it went out.  I had no idea how viscerally I would feel about the threat of strong storms after what happened here last week.

Hope all is well in your part of the world, and I hope to have time to be blogging more regularly very soon!  If not next week, definitely after June 22nd, when my 70-day-weekend begins!
