Black and White Challenge Day 2

For my second focal black and white photo, perhaps I’ve gone a little cliché, but I chose this male northern cardinal hidden away in the shrubs in my backyard. Cardinals provide some much needed color around here during those so dreary winter days.

My cardinal is not in the best focus here, but I still thought it made an interesting shot.

  1. Sometimes while I’m writing (and thinking) I roam around the house, bemoaning the gray, still-cold days. Then I look out my window at the cardinal splashing up the white/gray landscape with red. My mood lifts. Yours too, I see.🙂

    • You are so right Pamela! I love those brief flashes of red.

  2. I like this better. See how the snow and tree produce tonal contrasts? Try something. Increase the contrast and then the brightness and see what you get. The cardinal draws the eye and gives it a nice anchor in the frame. Here, the splash of color works.

    • Thanks burstmode – and thank you for the thoughtful commentary. I’ll give your thoughts a try next time I have a chance to play around in Lightroom.

  3. That is exactly how the beautiful male cardinal looks to me in winter — a bright splash of color in a black and white world. Wonderfully done, Karma. 🙂

    • Thanks Robin. I’m always happy for a flash of cardinal in a gray winter scene.
