Changes!

Days 62 and 63 of summer have brought some new things to my life. Yesterday, this was delivered to my home:

A new mattress may not seem like much of a change, but for me it is. I’ve slept on a waterbed since I was a teenager. I’ve gotten to a time in my life where that just didn’t seem to be what my body wanted any more. I slept very comfortably on this new bed last night and I’m looking forward to many more comfortable nights.

The next part of my day wasn’t a change, but I still wanted to mark the memory for how I spent this day of my summer.

Did some back-to-school shopping with Meghan. We shopped and had lunch together and I enjoyed her company. She moves back to school soon so it was really nice to have this time.

Today a most momentous and exciting change has occurred! Many of you who have been reading my blog for some time now know that I have been working as a paraprofessional in a local middle school for quite some time now. I’m certified as a teacher, and I thought I might get my big break as a teacher when a couple of social studies teachers at my school retired this spring. Alas, it was not to be. My principal called me up today and asked me to serve as the long term substitute teacher for a maternity leave at my school. I will be teaching 6th grade math for the first half of the school year! I am excited and nervous and thrilled all bundled into one. Where you’ll find me for the first 90 days of school:

I’ve got lots of preparation to do but I will have the wonderful support of a great staff of teachers to help me out! A new adventure indeed!

    • I can’t take any credit for how the room looks – the teacher did it before she went on maternity leave. 🙂

  4. A mattress sounds like a wonderful thing to me, Karma. Oh, the summer is flying by! I am thinking of going downstate to visit my family and that will make everything fly oh the faster.

  7. Congratulations, Karma! I’m so glad this new adventure came through for you. And who knows where it might lead?
Your new bed really interests me. I have a waterbed, too, and have been wanting to switch to a regular bed because I’ve noticed I sleep better in hotels than I do at home. It used to be the opposite. If we ever get caught up around here, and if things stop breaking down and needing replaced, I think the next big investment will be a new mattress.

    • Thank you Robin. I do hope this experience leads to new opportunities. I’m happy with the mattress – we bought a “plush top” memory foam mattress; it has the nice support of a real mattress but keeps some of the body hugging comfort of a waterbed.

  8. Félicitations, Karen, c’est magnifique et quel défi ! Les maths, ce n’était pas mon truc… mais j’admire les professeurs. Bonne chance et bonne nuit sur ton super matelas.

Enjoy your (temporary) job. Here’s hoping you get a permanent one soon.

    Congrats !

    • Alas I cannot take credit for the sudoku, the original teacher did that.
Thank you Sybil, from your lips….

  10. I hope this leads to the teaching job of your dreams! My sister, who was trained to be a middle school science teacher ended up doing long term subbing for Freshmen Algebra for almost an entire year. She had to do the homework for the next week the weekend before and teach herself the stuff. It was hard but she did it. They didn’t end up hiring her for that job, and she was sort of relieved, as it wasn’t her favorite. She’s a special ed teacher now for middle school kids and she loves that.

    • That would be so wonderful if this job did lead me somewhere. Got my fingers crossed. Thanks Dawn.
