Weekend Fun for 8, 9, &10

Summer days 8, 9, and 10 were spent on our annual group camping trip. If you are curious about this tradition of ours, you can read a couple different posts I’ve done about it using this link.

We returned to Shawme Crowell State Forest on Cape Cod for this year’s trip. We arrived on Friday afternoon with relatively few traffic hassles, which is always a nice bonus.

We set up our tent in the sunshine and enjoyed a beautiful, rain-free weekend.

A short exploration of one of many trails in the state park started our day on Saturday.

That was followed with lunch at a local seafood place and an afternoon at the beach by the canal.

It was a beautiful, relaxing weekend spent with great people.

Our dogs even came home from the doggie-spa (kennel) fresh and clean!

7 and See You in a Few

I only took one picture today, Day 7, but that picture is enough for me for this journal of my summer.

Salad for lunch with a friend

I visited a very dear friend today, my sister in heart and in spirit if not in blood, who has been in my daily thoughts for weeks and will continue to be for months to come.

Tomorrow we head out for the annual camping trip, so I won’t be around in the blogosphere until Sunday evening.
Keep posting whimsy if you have it over the weekend.

Theme for Summer Day 6 : “Purge”
Purge

It came about kind of suddenly. I was putting laundry away and realized I was having a lot of trouble fitting things into my drawers and my closet. I haven’t probably cleared away everything that needs to go, but I put a huge dent in it today. I got rid of things that no longer fit, were shapeless or worn out, or that I hadn’t worn in over a year. Felt good! I’d like to show you a picture of a neat, organized closet, but that hasn’t happened yet. You probably wouldn’t believe I really threw things out if I showed it to you!

Summer Morning

Today’s theme, for Summer Day 5, is “Appreciating Morning”. I’m generally the first one up in my house, and I have come to appreciate that morning time as my quiet time to myself. When in school, I was up each school day at 5:45 am. Now that I can get up when I feel like it, I am still usually up no later than 7:00. Today was a gloriously beautiful morning – about 70 degrees and a cloudless sky -and my deck was just begging me to head outside with a cup of coffee, so I did.

While I soaked up some vitamin D and enjoyed my java, I took notice of the pretty light and that the flower containers I planted this year were actually looking pretty nice.

I even liked the way my newly painted purple toenails looked in the morning light!

Summer Day 4

Theme for today? “In the Weeds”. Funny, that’s what I used to say in my waitress days – if we were bogged down with lots of customers needing many things at the same time, we used to yell out that we were “in the weeds” to see if anyone had an available hand to help out.
Today’s interpretation of in the weeds is much more literal:
Weedy

I spent my morning weeding the veggie garden. I forgot to take a picture for you before I got started, as you can see, but if you can imagine the whole garden looking like the upper half of this picture, you will understand how things started out today.

I made progress slowly but surely:
Making progress
Here I’ve hoed down most of the weeds, but still need to rake them up and take them away.

Job done
I didn’t nab every single one of them today, but it is enough. I did, unfortunately, accidentally mow down two pepper plants that were not doing very well, darn it! I was careful to hand weed around each plant before hoeing the larger area to avoid just such an accident, but my fervor to get the job done must have blinded me to them.

Yes, it is a bit dry looking out there. We haven’t had significant rain for about a week I’d say. I put Miracle Grow on the plants after I weeded and will do a more thorough watering later today.
Keep Cool and Summer On!

Days 2 and 3 of 66 Days of Summer

Day 2 of my summer break was the actual Summer Solstice. 16 hours and 23 minutes of daylight I calculated for my area, including the civil twilight times before sunrise and after sunset. I celebrated the solstice with homemade strawberry shortcake! Strawberries are at their peak around here right now, so I also made homemade biscuits and whipped cream to complement them.

Juicy and delicious

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Flaky and fabulous!

Day 3 turned out to be a somewhat lazy Sunday. I did the stuff that needed doing, but I also spent some time here:
summer stuff
My anti-gravity lounge chair, iPod, bluetooth speaker, Kindle, bottle of water and the radio to listen to the Red Sox game!

Lounging
Time to kick back!

Themes for these days? How about “Solstice and Shortcake” for yesterday and “Lazy Lounging” for today? 😉

66 Days of Summer

focus.jpg (1 of 1)

Today is June 20th. The first day of my summer. The official first day of summer is tomorrow, but my summer vacation begins today. A couple months ago, I had talked to Kate Austin about this idea I had about a photo or theme for all the days of my summer vacation this year. I know that I was inspired by something that she is working on, but that something is escaping me at the moment. Unfortunately Kate has decided to discontinue her blog, Crossroads, and has deleted it, so I can’t find what originally inspired me. Kate is still posting her beautiful shots at the link I provided up there, so I’m hoping we will still be interacting.

I doubt that I will be posting daily. As much as I would like to challenge myself to that, I know that at times over the summer it will simply be impossible. I will, however, do my best to keep track of my photo or theme for each day and post as often as I can.

For today, day 1 of summer, a theme has already emerged for my day: maintenance

I did maintenance chores on the hot tub:

I’m planning to do lawn maintenance this afternoon:

And I am planning to maintain all the hard work I’ve done to improve my health and get my body into better shape:
focus2.jpg (1 of 1)

Since I finished the 10 week regimen of T25, I’m working on a hybrid schedule of workouts to try to maintain my fitness level, and maybe even move up to a new level. I don’t know what I am capable of, but I’d like to spend some time finding out!

I haven’t forgotten about the whimsy photo hunt, but I think I will officially extend the deadline to Monday June 30th. To those of you who have already submitted your posts, thanks so much! I will be around to see them soon.

Promised Peonies…. and a little more

My other favorite flower that I grow in the beds around my home are peonies.  I don’t get tons of them on my humble little bushes, but I get enough to enjoy.  Last Friday for school I even pressed one into service as a hair accessory; it was “Tropical Day” so a hot pink peony got to help me complete my look.  I didn’t think to take a selfie for y’all, but here are some photos from the following morning of some rain-kissed beauties in my yard.

After I took the peony photos, I decided to take a little wander around the yard to see what else might be blooming. I was glad I did. I reminded myself, quite literally, to stop and smell the roses.

I just loved the big ol’ water droplet hanging out on the petal here.

Some of the new perennials that I planted in my perennial bed last year are blooming too. Forgive me, I can’t remember their names.

And of course I can’t forget the crazy poppy:

How is your whimsical hunting coming along? Things have been busy around here lately and my own search for whimsy is not doing well. I’m considering extending the deadline a bit. I don’t think that would bother anyone would it?

I love that song, though I’m not sure why it is called “Iris”. However, I thought it an appropriate intro to today’s post!

They are blooming like gangbusters right now and I just love them. One of my favorite flowers, bearded irises.
