A Peek at Peaks

This past weekend, my sister invited me to spend a couple days with her on Peaks Island in Maine. Peaks is a small island in Casco Bay, about 15 minutes from mainland Portland by ferry. Her husband’s family has been vacationing on Peaks for many years. I’ve been to visit a few times in the past, but my most recent trip prior to this past weekend was about 5 years ago, so I decided to take Jennifer up on her offer.

During the ferry ride, I had a view of the iconic Portland Headlight:

Each morning I was there, Jennifer and I and her cute little cavachon, Ozzie

took an around-the-island walk of about 4.5 miles.

I saw many beautiful flowers in bloom:

This cottage had gorgeous climbing flowers (roses? not sure!)

Probably of no surprise to anyone who reads this blog, sea birds also caught my camera’s attention.
Cormorants:

A blue heron:

and I’m not sure what kind of duck this is:
Black and white duck? Any id ideas?
I’ve spent some time on my bird identification site and I’ve been unable to come up with an exact match. Any thoughts?

I also got to photograph a new-to-me bird, a cedar waxwing:

Isn’t it pretty? It turned around and appeared to be looking right at me:

Here’s a sight you don’t see everyday when you are out for a walk:

Don’t ask me, I really don’t know! 😉

Peaks almost always has a lovely sunset to round out your day:

I hope you enjoyed your little tour around Peaks Island!

P.S. Scott has a new photo assignment! Pop on over and check it out!

  1. Thank you for the shout out and for sharing these lovely photos.

Not sure about the duck either. Almost looks like it was changing his plumage from breeding colors or molting. Tough angle to get enough identification markers.

    • I’m having a tough time with that duck! It looks a little bit like a couple different kinds of ducks but doesn’t seem to match any of them exactly.
      Thanks Scott.

  2. Loved the visit to the island. I checked both Peterson and iBird Plus and had no luck with your duck.

    • It’s an unlucky ducky isn’t it, Carol? 😉
      Thank you!

    • Thanks so much Kate! Yes, I really loved the cedar waxwings. I have no idea if I will ever see them again since I don’t know if they hang out in Massachusetts or not.

  5. Love that picture of Ozzie! You got some really nice shots of the birds, glad you found out what that pointy headed one was. I’m going with a scoter duck, look it up. 🙂
(p.s. It’s actually “Peaks”, not “Peak’s” – sorry if you got that off some random locator thingie that came up on Facebook on my photos.)

    • Ozzie just happened to turn and look at me at that moment. I thought he looked nice in that light!
Believe me, I have looked at scoter ducks. There are 3 or 4 different kinds of scoters, and my picture doesn’t seem to match any of them exactly. The shape of the head definitely seems right for a scoter, but the markings don’t match any of the breeds. I’ve even found a website you can send a picture of a bird to and they will try to identify it. I haven’t heard back.
I fixed all of my “Peaks” mistakes! Thanks!

  6. Gorgeous pics, Karen! The hubby and I will be vacationing in Portland next month. It’s supposed to be a “romantic” vacation trip, but I’m equally as anxious to take some pictures in New England! Thanks for the “taste” of what’s to come!

  7. Karen…your pictures are gorgeous! The flowers are so pretty and as you know Portland Headlight is one of my favorites that I haven’t seen for a while. Looks like my girls had a very relaxing time on the island.

  8. Beautiful! Brilliantly captured. For a minute, I wished living in that cottage. Fresh and Lively. Nice island it seems. I love the sunset. Thank you very much, Karen.

  11. Wonderful series of images, Karma. Looks like the Cedar Waxwings are cooperative this year. That sculpture cracked me up! 🙂

    Comment by Robin — July 20, 2013 @ 4:35 pm | Reply

    • Thanks Robin! I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a Cedar Waxwing before this year, never mind photographed one. My sister says that the person part of the sculpture is a new addition while the bicycle part had been there for a long time.
