Composing for Color

Color, color, color – what a challenge for this dreary month!  Those were my thoughts when Scott Thomas first announced his photo assignment for November.  I read the links that Scott shared, as well as Scott’s post full of lovely examples and set my thoughts in motion.

Jennifer, Renae and I enjoyed another lovely luncheon at Pickity Place last weekend and I hoped that Pickity might provide some photo opportunities.  There was not a lot of offerings, but I had my eyes open for leading lines and punches of color.

This may be a bit opposite of the ideas expressed in color composition, but I like the way the gray and white cat was framed by color:

These next couple shots I took on my day off from work on Monday.  I was surprised to catch the sun just peeking above my neighbor’s shed surrounded by fog, giving the shot a beautiful but a little eerie color:

I couldn’t decide which version of this picture I liked better. It was taken only a couple minutes later, but the fog is bit more evident in this shot. Does that take away from composing for color?

Here is one more different take on color composition. On my looking-for-bluebirds walk, I happened to look up and spot these bright red berries spattered among the grayish brown branches – color just jumping out at me.

So who woulda thunk it? Include my bluebirds and I think I found a pretty good variety for dreary ol’November. Thanks for the assignment, Scott!

  1. You did find a bit of color in a month when most things have turned brown. I haven’t been to Pickity Place in years…I enjoyed lunch on my last visit.

    • It wasn’t easy, but I managed a bit. Pickity is a wonderful spot for lunch with girlfriends. Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Karen.

  2. The last is my favourite. That red jumps out against the grey.

    • Thanks Sybil – that’s exactly what the red did on our walk – if they could’ve spoken, I’m sure the berries would have been yelling, “take our picture!!”

  3. You already knew I’d love all the red, but I’m very taken with the grey and white kitty with the golden eye, too. Cats are subtle.

    • Thanks Gerry. The Pickity Kitty resembles Miss Puss just a little, no? I hope it isn’t too sad to mention her name.

  4. Pops of color, just lovely! I think I like the reversed sample best too – but then it has a furry friend in it, so of course I would.

    • Furry friends are always a happy addition to a photo, in my opinion. Thanks Carol.

  5. Bravo pour tes découvertes colorées en novembre ! J’aime beaucoup la couleur orange et les deux premières photos sont mes favorites. Mais toutes tes photos ont un charme particulier.

  6. Good job with the color assignment, Karma. I love the red berries. They always seem to pop out in a gray landscape. As for the sunrise shot, I like the first one the best because it looks so eerie and yellow. Even though fog is an all-time favorite. Happy Thanksgiving, friend!

  9. I’m torn between the cat and the berries as favorites. Gerry is right about cats — they are subtle, even when it comes to color. Beautiful, Karma, especially those sunrise shots.

    • Thank you Robin. I did find this assignment to be quite the challenge. November is not a favorite month of mine!
