Funking Out in Every Way

Boy, what a funk I’ve found myself in today.  Today is the official beginning of autumn.  Coincidence?  I think not!  As much as I’d love to blame the start of fall for my mood, in all fairness, it really wasn’t at fault.  For most of the day, the weather was nothing but lovely. This mood that I’m in, however, will allow me to present my feelings about the end of summer with unvarnished truth.

storm clouds rolling in

I think regular readers of this blog already know about how I feel concerning summer’s demise.  How apropos to find gray clouds blotting out the sun as I searched out the subjects of my photos for Scott’s assignment.  The sky mirrored the feelings in my head and my heart today.

shades of gray

The golden warmth of a summer day that warms my soul and my toes will soon be whisked away as we barrel head on toward the cold and drizzle of the months to come.

Memories of summer packed away, awaiting better days.
Beach supplies packed away

No one is splashing, swimming, floating, enjoying the pool any longer as my raft lies abandoned, dry and deflating and awaiting closure.
Sorry pool float

And my boys of summer. As sad a story as there could be. Their season nearly over before it began, officially eliminated from play-offs, just playing out the month. My Red Sox bear hides his face.

I promise I’ll snap out of it.  This funk won’t rule this blog, or my life for long.  This post was my contribution to Scott’s assignment “End of Summer.”  There is still time for you to participate – posts are due by midnight your time on Wednesday, September 26th.

  1. You ARE in a funk, aren’t ya hon ? I’m an autumn sorta girl and found that HOT summer TOO much, even here in Nova Scotia.

Enjoy your funk — but don’t linger there too long. 😉

    • Yes, but I’m feeling a little less funky today. We’ll see what the day brings. When I get my pool closed and get a chance to bite a freshly picked apple, I will definitely feel a lot better!

  2. Your end of summer funk is how I start feeling along about February, when winter is lingering far too long to suit me. I love autumn, though, do not regret summer’s departing at all, but I will regret autumn leaving us. Love your choices for End of Summer – all I can think of is autumn leaves, not nearly as original as you!

    • Thank you Carol. Oh believe me, there will be another funk around the time that you describe. I usually have terrible cabin fever come February. Can’t think about that right now though. Trying to get my head in a better place to appreciate the good that comes with autumn.

  3. Funks are sad, Karma. I can feel your funk all the way to the shores of this freezing cold lake which almost–almost–made it snow yesterday. Those wet droplets that are half rain and half snow. I was in a funk on Friday, but resurrected on Saturday. How are you feeling today, my friend? Love, Kathy

    Comment by Kathy — September 23, 2012 @ 9:27 am | Reply

    • I’m a bit better today, Kathy – thank you for asking. I started the day yesterday with a headache and hubby having car troubles which added that dark shadow to my mood. The headache is mostly gone today – but I can still feel that little “echo” of where it was in my head, if that makes any sense. I’m trying to get myself looking forward to crisp apples and colorful mums.

      • Glad your headache is mostly gone. May it completely go today…

  4. J’aime tes photos de la fin de l’été, Karen. Ton esprit est un peu morose mais tes photos pleines de couleurs 🙂 Bientôt tu te réjouiras du bel Automne, je le souhaite vivement.

  5. Aww, don’t be sad….look forward to NEXT summer! 🙂
Hmm, do you think that’s why nature puts on such a show in the fall, with those gorgeous fall colors….to make it up to those who don’t want summer to end?

    • Next summer is soooo far away! Wah!
I think the autumn display is Mama’s last big hurrah before she throws the evil white stuff this way!

  6. I completely understand the weather affecting your mood – it happens to me every time it’s cloudy and humid outside! I hope the weather decides to bring some more pleasant days our way before winter sets in!

    • I’m sure there will be lovely days to come – just not the hot, lazy days that make me want to plant my toes on the beach!

  7. Karen..your pictures are so sad. I share your summer end feelings while Jim is jumping for joy. I am trying to get into the good feeling of crisp leaves, Macouns and pretty wreaths. “Nobody on the road, nobody on the beach!”. Oh wait..those are good things. 🙂

    • I think what bugs me the most is how quickly winter sneaks up on us! As much as I try to enjoy autumn, it is gone in a blink and then winter drags its feet for way too long.

  8. I hope you’re feeling better now….you’re going to get some gorgeous color soon, out there in the east. I always think I just have to get to Christmas and then we’re headed into spring. I know it’s not true, but it’s how I get through the winter. And you KNOW Christmas will be here before we know it!

    Comment by Dawn — September 24, 2012 @ 9:13 pm | Reply

    • I hope we do get some nice color Dawn. It seems like the crazy heat we had so early in the spring this year wreaked havoc with a lot of normal growing things, so I hope we do get that lovely display. It is so true about Christmas – winter just races right in here WAY too fast, then lingers for WAY too long!

  9. You have made a fine post here, that also captures many of my own feelings about the end of summer. Many of us who live here, where winter is approaching, are yearning for next summer….. 🙂

    • Thank you Truels. The glory days of summer seem so very far away right now.

  10. I’m sorry about your funk, Karma, and hope this finds you better (since I’m so far behind). You did a wonderful job of expressing your feelings through your images and your words. It almost makes me sad to see summer go.

    • Yes, I’m doing better this weekend, thanks Robin. Other circumstances, beyond the end of summer, contributed to my mood last weekend. I’m accepting and moving on.

  11. That’s how I feel about the end of fall… if only we could all enjoy all of the seasons! I think the pool shot describes the end of summer best… all it’s missing is a dead leaf. 😉

    Comment by Barbara — September 29, 2012 @ 9:20 am | Reply

    • There’s plenty of those in the bottom of my pool, Barbara, waiting for us to clean them out and close the pool. Sigh, there’s something else I dislike about the end of summer! In all honesty, I do enjoy MOST of the seasons – winter is the big exception.

  13. […] Karma’s first reaction to this assignment was she could not bring herself to photograph something so sad. I replied she could and it would be full of feeling. Even I did not know how much feeling. Her ode to the end of summer is a funky, sad and brilliant send off. […]
