Dancing in Wonderland

Hello there friends! It is the day before the official beginning of summer and I am finally feeling relaxed.  My last day of school was last Thursday and my girls’ last day was yesterday.  Phew!  70 days off to enjoy.  In addition to the end of school, we are also at the end of the dance season.  This past Saturday night was our recital.  I took LOTS of photos at dress rehearsal.  My daughters and I were in a total of 14 dances: 8 for Meghan, 4 for Sarah and 2 for me.

To anyone who doesn’t consider dance to be a sport, I beg to differ!  Check out the power, beauty, grace and concentration in these photos.

Meghan dancing to “Glitter in the Air” by Pink.

Sarah dancing to “Clocks” by Coldplay.

Meghan dancing to “Painting Flowers” by All Time Low.

Sarah dancing to “Bad Influence” by Pink.

“Alice in Wonderland” was the theme to recital this year.  All dances had some connection to the tale.

As I said, I took many more photos (if we are friends on Facebook, you can see more there) but these are all that I’ve edited so far.  And I have the feeling a couple more just might make their way into this month’s photo hunt!  Are you working on yours?  I can’t wait to see what you shoot.

  1. Looks exhausting….and why are there no pictures of you??

    • It can be exhausting! Same reason there’s few pictures of me at any time – that’s how it is for the family photographer! 🙂

  2. You and the girls were so beautiful dancing. It is certainly true that there is power, beauty and grace. As usual, I can hardly wait until next year.

  3. Oh gosh. I forgot about the Hunt. I’ll have to look at the list again and see what I captured on vacation.

Wonderful dance images, Karma. Having been a dancer (and gymnast), I know very well it’s a sport. I had football players in my ballet class who thought football was easier. lol!!

    • Thank you Robin. Funny you mention that about the football players. I have a sweatshirt that says “If dance were easier, it would be football!”

  4. Such grace and beauty – such physical in-shapeness (hey, look! I just made up a word). I’m not sure I consider dance a sport, but I do believe it requires as much physical strength, as much training, as much concentration and a whole lot more grace and beauty than any sport. The photo hunt? Yep, working on it, have a couple of ideas I need to execute, a few older photos I’ve pulled out of the archive. Good thing I still have a few days!

    • I like your made-up word! I’ll look forward to seeing what you come up with for the photo hunt. 🙂

  5. Hope you enjoy every one of your 70 days! Great shots…
It would definitely work better to have kids for this photo hunt…am still debating…..

    • Thanks Dawn. Planning to enjoy as much as possible.
I think you can pull off the hunt – Miss Katie seems to be a very willing subject!

  6. What fun to look at the dancing photos this morning, Karma. Your girls look like they are having so much fun. Scrolled up at least three times to see if there was a photo of you that I missed. 🙂

    • Thank you Kathy. As I said to Michaela, I am the family photographer, so there usually aren’t too many photos of me. I will, however, make a small confession to you: I handed off my camera to a friend at dress rehearsal to ask for photos to be taken of one of my daughter’s dances because I was going to be on stage myself right after her dance and wouldn’t be able to take my own shots. I then had to change costumes for my 2nd dance, and by the time I got back to my friend in the audience, she had taken some pictures of me! The looks on my face are not very complimentary, so I haven’t posted any of them. I found one this morning that isn’t too bad, but haven’t decided if I’ll post! 🙂

      • tee hee…I can understand well your challenge! Don’t you hate it when our faces our in funny expressions? Darn, why can’t we always be looking polished? 🙂

  7. How very “aplomb”! 🙂

The next time you are able to photograph your girls on stage at a rehearsal see if you can get a step ladder so that you can be higher up. You’ll have an easier time capturing the dance poses (less crotch shots 😉 )and the floor makes for a good background. The lighting will be better as well. You’ll even be able to use flash without worrying about getting strange highlights in the eyes.

    • Thanks for the advice, but unfortunately it just wouldn’t be possible in this situation. Managing costume changes for 14 dances, including 2 of my own, I just have to run out there and get what I can for shots!
