In the line of duty

Hello reader friends.  I’d like to start by apologizing for my recent absence from the blogosphere.  We’ve gotten into that crazy-busy time of year as the end of the school year approaches and I haven’t had the time to sit and write and read blogs as much as I’d like to.

On top of all the usual busy-ness at this time of year, a terribly sad event that sickens me to my stomach has occured this week, and I felt the need to express my feelings here in this space.  As many of you may know, my husband is a police officer in the city right next to the little suburb where I live.  On this past Monday, in the middle of a sunny afternoon, a police officer in the city my husband works for, was shot and killed in the line of duty.

The story, as I understand it, is that the officer was escorting a couple living in an apartment complex.  The woman had just had a restraining order issued against the man, and asked for police assistance when the man came to the apartment to gather his belongings.  Upon reaching the apartment, the woman and man went inside when the man suddenly slammed the apartment door and shot the police officer through the door.  He then shot the woman (who I believe is still in critical condition), opened the door and shot the officer again, ran out of the apartment and killed himself.

I feel sucker-punched and sick to the stomach.  Someone who could conceive of this type of violence obviously has no regard for human life.  As angry as he may have been, what solace did killing a 36-year veteran of the police department bring him?  Desperate enough to take his own life?  Why take innocent other lives with him?

We will never have the answers to these questions.

Thank you for allowing me the space to express my feelings today; I know this is not what you normally come to my blog to read.  If you have the opportunity, say “thank you” to a police officer today.
