7 Things about Me, Day 3

Filed under: Uncategorized — Karma @ 6:00 am

As long as I’ve been on the subject of high school, here’s a funny confession for Day 3.  Hopefully my sister and my BFF won’t kill me for posting this.  When we were teenagers, Jennifer, Renae and I absolutely loved music videos.  Our town didn’t  have many choices for cable TV, and we were terribly disappointed that MTV was not an option for us.  We used to go around exclaiming “I want my MTV!!!!”  We stayed up late on weekends watching Friday Night Videos on NBC and Night Flight on USA network to get our fill.

One day, Renae’s stepdad bought a video camera.  Bored teenagers in the summertime started scheming.  Let’s make our own music videos!  None of us had any musical talent, but we could lip-sync.  We went through our wardrobes and found clothing so that we could dress up as a variety of 80’s music groups: The Power Station, Bananarama, A-Ha, and Robert Palmer’s famous “Addicted to Love” video fell victim to us.  As far as I know, Renae still has possession of those videos on VHS tapes.  Here we are dressed as A-Ha:

Here’s a link to a photo of the look we were shooting for  and the video they were most famous for, in case you have no idea what I am talking about!

  1. OMG! Freaking hilarious!!! 😀 I love it!
Would love to see those videos! 🙂
I was one of the lucky ones who got MTV in its early days. I still remember the very first music video I ever saw….DuranDuran’s Hungry Like the Wolf. 🙂 It was the most bizarre thing I had ever seen…it made no sense to me at the time, but my cousins and I were HOOKED. I think that’s all we watched for years. Too bad MTV is no longer “M”TV.

    • I don’t think Renae will ever consent to digital conversion and posting – though it would be a definite hoot if she would! Glad to give you a laugh today!

    • Holly, would you believe the three of us when to see A-Ha in concert??? Unfortunately, it was the worst concert I’ve ever been to due to all the screaming girls totally drowning out the music!

  3. AM. NOT. LAUGHING. No honest… I’m not… I have a cough.. **cough cough**… See !!… That said, you should really have dug out and converted one of those videos for our viewing amusement pleasure… 😉

  4. HILARIOUS!!!! My-oh-my, Karma, you are REALLY revealing all the dark secrets of your youth!! 🙂 I suppose it could be worse….you could have all dressed up like Flock of Seagulls! 😉

I bet RIGHT NOW, Renae is hiding those videos lest you get your hands on them, digitize them and post them on YouTube! (which I would PAY to see!!!)

(BTW…don’t you just LOVE the thumb in the frame of the photo! My parents ALWAYS did that!)

    • Heh, heh – Flock of Seagulls! There’s a one-hit wonder!
Am I doing good dishing the dirt? 😉

  7. HA HA HA!!! All I can say is thank God you didn’t post the one of us as Bananarama. Although the Robert Palmer one would be okay.

    Comment by JenniferA — February 8, 2012 @ 8:28 pm | Reply

    • I don’t have a Bananarama picture so you are safe! The only other one I found was us as the Power Station and its a kind of dark Polaroid shot.

  8. You are so very brave! I want to know what your daughters think? No MTV in Vermont either. Loved Friday night videos.

    • They don’t seem to think too much of it, surprisingly!

  9. This is great! I think you three look fantastic. Someday those videos may show up on YouTube and go viral. lol!

Now I have a better idea of just how much older than you I am. (Does that sentence make sense? I haven’t had my caffeine yet this morning… )

    Comment by Robin — February 9, 2012 @ 8:50 am | Reply

    • Hee, hee – fantastic huh? With our 80’s permed hair (well, mine and my sister’s, Renae’s is natural) and attempts to glower at the camera? Thanks Robin.
No worries – I understood your uncaffeinated thinking. 😉

  10. OMG, I just heard “Take On Me” last week (really, when do you hear THAT song on the radio???) and I was wondering how kind Father Time has been to lead singer Morten Whatshislastname and what he looks like today.

I swear on my hoodlums’ lives, I honestly have NO idea where those videos are.

    Comment by Renae — February 9, 2012 @ 9:09 am | Reply

    • Morten Harket is pretty much revered in Norway and he still looks great. I only know this because I am a fan of Kurt Nilsen and he got to sing with Morten.

    • We watched some of those videos at your house a few years ago Renae. I don’t think you could find all of them, but you did have a couple! Morten didn’t look too bad at the “official website of a-ha”: http://a-ha.com/the-band/
