It’s snowing today. It has snowed a bit here and there this month, but the first really significant amount of winter is expected today – 3 to 6 inches – although I realize that amount wouldn’t be considered “significant” by many of you.
My empty shepard’s hook in that picture, as well as Robin and Bob, have been reminding me that I still need to get out and replace my bird feeder. The squirrels destroyed mine last summer and I never got around to replacing it.
My blog post title reminds me vaguely of a favorite children’s book I used to read with my girls: A Summery Saturday Morning. Quite the opposite today.
My blog post content today gets some inspiration from Kathy:
I was following my usual Saturday morning routine, drinking coffee and reading blogs. I knew I wanted to post today, but the thoughts weren’t quite jelling in my head. Kathy wrote a post about an ordinary day, but made it extraordinary with her writing skills. I don’t have Kathy’s writing skills, but sometimes I can tell an interesting story. Hell, maybe this won’t be too interesting, but I think it will satisfy my desire to blog today!
After noticing the snow and the tight rhododendron leaves this morning, my thoughts turned to the somewhat evil purchase I made:
Have you heard of Paczki (pronounced “poonch-key”) before? They are crazy, over-stuffed Polish donuts that are only made in the few weeks before Mardi Gras:
Our local supermarket chain, Big Y, makes a big deal about them every year, and every year I get suckered into buying a box. I regret it after I eat them. I’ve got that cruise coming up in April – paczki will NOT help me look alright in my bathing suit! I think I better spend some time doing this today:
Wii players! Highly recommended for a fun workout game! The different songs you can play even give you “sweat levels” so you can gauge how much of an aerobic workout you might get.
A snowy day also brings opportunities for watching the furry ones enjoy themselves:
Gotta love a doggy snow-beard!
And this picture has absolutely nothing to do with anything I’m writing about today, but I still find it blog-worthy:
(What do you think, Kathy, a step in the right direction? 😉 )
Well that was a thoroughly disjointed and rambling blog post! Enjoy your Saturday, snowy or otherwise!
I love to watch dogs playing.
The Paczki look delish. Did you save the chocolate covered one for me ?

Sorry Sybil, my girls pretty much demolished the chocolate ones!

I’m so jealous of your snow!!! It was 77 degrees here yesterday (SO WRONG for January!) and today we’ll barely make it into the 50’s. But, if we do get snow, it tends to be a little closer to spring, so there’s still hope for some birthday snow 😉
Those donuts look really yummy! Next time you buy some you can bring them over and I’ll help you eat them.
Happy Saturday!

The snow does look pretty today – the sun is shining now (Sunday morning). If the temperature comes up a bit, maybe I’ll get outside for some pictures; its currently about 8 degrees!

Enjoyed the post, and thanks for the shout-out. 🙂

Paczki!!!! I love them. Yummmmm. Never heard of them until we moved here where there are lots of folks with Polish heritage. I am surprised to see them already. They don’t show up here until a day or two prior to Fat Tuesday. They’re gone by Ash Wednesday.
I thoroughly enjoyed this post. It’s always fun to see what makes up the everyday for others. Doggie snow beards crack me up, as did that last shot. So typically cat. Thank you for the link love. 🙂

If I have any will power, that will be my first and LAST box of paczki this year! I don’t want to know how many calories are in one.
Dogs in the snow sure are funny. I didn’t get a picture, but Daphne filled her whole face with it.
That is a very typical “cat” shot – Cedric finds his way into the middle of everything. He is literally sitting between my arms as I type this comment!

Hi Karma! (I’ve already read this three times today–guess it’s time to comment.) Thank you for being inspired by my blog to write about your ordinary extraordinary day! Don’t know if you came over to read my answer to your comment today but here’s the best way to gain willpower to lose weight before your April cruising adventure. Try on your bathing suit every day. EVERY day. The next time you see a paczki you will say “NO!” because you’ll want to fit in that bathing suit. That’s been my theory, and believe it or not, it’s working. We hope it’s working. 🙂

Oh brrrrr! The thought of putting on the suit as I look out at the snow makes me cold, LOL! I am resolved, however, to not buy any more paczki!
Thanks for reading my post and leaving your always-thoughtful comments! (I’ll be popping around reading comment replies today 🙂 )

It was a pretty snowstorm yesterday. Stella and I were the only two who got outside to enjoy it. Today we are going to take advantage of the snow with a little sledding at Fountain Park.
I’ve never had those donuts and i think I will be staying far away from them. What are they stuffed with?
Did you get a new bird feeder? I filled mine yesterday making the birds very happy.

I’m hoping to get out for a walk with the dogs today if the temperature warms up a bit – it is still in the single digits while I type this comment; it is very pretty today with the sun shining on our new blanket off snow.
Paczki are filled with a variety of jellies. My box contained raspberry, apple, and the chocolate ones had custard – like Boston cream pie.
I did get new feeders: Home Depot had a package of two glass and copper feeders. They are a little smaller than a typical feeder but I would think the squirrrels shouldn’t be able to destroy glass!

The squirrels and I had ongoing battles for two years, going through countless birdfeeders, until I found some that were surrounded by coated wire with about 1″ openings. I finally won! I have keyboard resting on cat’s back to type this – the keyboard I use with the iPad is bluetooth and very lightweight, and seems to disturb Twiggy not at all.
Comment by Carol — January 22, 2012 @ 10:30 am |
I had a feeder similar to that Carol. But the local birds didn’t seem to like it either! Only the tiniest of finches seemed able to get at the seed, so I stopped using that one. I hung my new ones, and so far it is going okay. The squirrels may not have noticed it yet!
I don’t think my kitty would mind being a keyboard backstop – I’m sure he’d be totally okay with it! 🙂

Love the rambling….we have Pazczkis here, as we have a big Polish community in Detroit. It’s a very big deal! Though I have never eaten one.

Oh good – nice to know I’m not always rambling to myself, LOL! Thanks Dawn.

There is a lot of joy in watching dogs play in the snow … and a lot of joy in donuts. I am thankful that those yummy donuts can not be found out here in the woods, I would be tempted, too. thanks for a fun post.

Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting Beary! Hopefully my temptation for this paczki season is over!
