Beauties and the Beast

According to the Online Slang Dictionary, the definition of beast is : “very good, excellent, cool, awesome.”  You can probably guess who my beauties are:

The annual semi-formal dance was last night at the high school.  The girls had a great time at the dance and I didn’t have to go pick them up! Definite benefit of having a licensed-to-drive daughter!

So what was the beast?

The food of Pig Out! (read here for the uniniated)  As usual, we had an unbelievable spread for an afternoon of eating and laughing.

Included here: “cheesy poufs” – a recipe created a few years ago of shredded cheese and mayo (I think?) baked on slices of French bread, apricot salsa-cream cheese spread with pretzel crackers, crescent roll pinwheels with cream cheese and bacon, fresh veggie tray with ranch dip, fondue (my own thrown together creation made with cheddar, brie and gouda) with breadsticks, chips and dip and our perennial favorite:

chocolate-dipped strawberries!  Mom added dried apricots to the mix this year.  And this wasn’t everything!  There were also bites of puff pastry and filo-dough creations and dough-wrapped cocktail weenies.  I forgot to get a picture of the three kinds of homemade cookies we had.  It was quite the afternoon of indulgence.

Recipe for creating your own “pig out”:

Combine people who have known and loved each other for over 30 years.

Add in pot luck style food of both savory and sweet.

Mix in laughter, tears, stories and hugs.

Stir well and enjoy!

  10. Oh, my – that was quite the Pig Out! Sooooo, is this event in rebellion to most people’s New Years Resolution to eat healthier? OR, is it simply to get it out of the way early on so you never feel deprived?

Pig Outs are actually not a bad idea. I’ll explain. 🙂

Most people try to be ‘good’ every day, eating close to the recommended daily allowance for fat and sugar. Our bodies will only absorb so much fat/sugar so, sometimes, this thinking can backfire if you are maxing out what your body absorbs daily. If, on the other hand, you consume LESS fat/sugar than what your body abosrbs on a daily basis, (and therefore, never maxing out), but then have a ‘pig out day’ where you go waaaaay over the amount your body will absorb, you actually come out ahead. I learnt this from a couple of body builders who would have one ‘pig out’ day every two weeks.

I hope the girls had a GREAT time at their formal! They look so pretty! 🙂

    • Interesting theory! My general motto about food (and life in general, for that matter) is “all things in moderation” – except when it comes to pig out! 😉 Nope, no rebellion, or anything like that; just a tradition that sprang forth one day many years ago and has been cheerfully carried on annually ever since.
Thanks Tracy – the girls did have a great time.

  11. I love your girls, too, after you’ve posted so many wonderful pics of them. I also love a good pig-out, although am trying not to do that these days, because have to fit into shorts/capris within two weeks.

    • Thank you Kathy! Best wishes on your shorts and capris. I should keep that in mind myself when I feel like stuffing myself with goodies this winter.

  12. […] Christmas celebrations continued and will still continue this week. We had a Christmas dinner with my father the day after Christmas at my sister’s house. She made a delicious white wine coq-au-vin. And this Friday, New Year’s Day, will be the famous annual Pig Out! […]
