Rainbow of Summer… in Maine

The posts have been pouring in for the August Photo Hunt.  There is still time to get yours in – due date is this Sunday – but I was thinking I should get mine posted today while I still have power!  What a summer it has been around here: first a tornado, then a microburst, an earthquake this past Tuesday (though I did not feel it), and now Hurricane Irene is projected to hit this area some time on Sunday.  What form it will take by the time it gets here no one really knows, but with this summer’s track record, it doesn’t look good.  At the very least, I am expecting to lose power again.

I hope my sister doesn’t think I am stealing her idea (she mentioned in the comments section of the Photo Hunt that she would find me a rainbow of colors on Peak’s Island while she was on vacation) but while I was still going through my photos from Maine, I realized I had all the rainbow colors in some of my favorite things about summer.

I eat usually 2 lobsters a year – one on vacation and one at our dear friends’ summer party, so a boiled lobster is the perfect representation of summer red.

Flower planted by the owner of the cottage where we stay  and…

a monarch along a path I walked.

These seem to be some wild snapdragons that I found on one of my walks.

Big blue sky and ocean and…

…look at all the blue I found when I looked at my family’s beach gear: bathing suits, towels, chairs, umbrella and float!

My “selfie”- this shot was actually inspired by the picture at the end of this post by KD.  If you haven’t read this post, you really should – go read it, I’ll wait.  Like KD, in this picture I am makeupless, feeling good and very content.  I am at peace when I am at the beach, and I hope it shows in this picture.

I will continue reading your posts as long as I have power this weekend!  The worst of the hurricane is supposed to come on Sunday, and I have to return to work on Monday (kids come back to school on Tuesday), so I’m not sure when I will get the recap of all the beautiful assignments posted.  In the meantime, check out the links in the comments section of the hunt post.  People have submitted some really beautiful pictures so far.  If you haven’t posted yours yet, I hope to see it soon!

  1. Beautiful images and wonderful selfie! I know what your peace feels like. I want it now. Good luck to you all this weekend!

    • Thank you Becky. I know, I wish I could be sitting on a peaceful beach in Maine right now instead of bracing for a hurricane. Good luck to you too. Keeping my fingers crossed – haven’t we had enough around here this summer?

  2. Like KD, you look so content! I envy your even skin tone…I, unfortunately, inherited my mother’s and grandmother’s ‘splotchy, freckly skin’.

That steamed lobster looks yummy and the shot of yoru family on the beach is a hoot!

Stay safe this weekend. The storm keeps getting pushed and I fear it will now strike us when it is dark. Not good times. 😦

    • Thanks Tracy – but I think the beautiful end-of-the-day light is hiding my true complexion. I am definitely freckly in the summertime, but I don’t mind them.
Best of luck to you for the storm too!

  3. Why, thank you for the ping back! Beautiful shots!
Yep…there’s nothing like the ocean to find yourself…strips everything unimportant away.

  4. I love that photo of you. You look so natural and relaxed and lovely. Glowing from being with your family on an adventure…

    Comment by Kathy — August 27, 2011 @ 10:50 am | Reply

    • Thanks Kathy – glad I could pull off the “relaxed” part; I was running back and forth to my camera using the 10 second self timer and trying to find just the right spot where I would be in focus, LOL!

  5. These are beautiful…. loooove the purple! Wish I was there right now…
    Cute self portrait 🙂

I got nothin’. Again. I’m sorry. Thanks to this awful heat and drought, I could show you a rainbow of brown with a little bit of green mixed in.

    • Thank you Michaela. We’ve got the opposite of drought going on here – doesn’t seem like anyone is overly happy with the weather these days!
Maybe you could find a rainbow in your vacation shots? I’ll take your submission late if you feel like looking! 🙂

  6. I can’t decide if I like purple best for the beauty or red for the subject matter! 🙂

    • What???? You don’t like my self-portrait best???? LOL! J/k of course!

  7. You sure have put together a real nice selection of summery based images here Karen… but that Lobster look mighty upset, and I don’t mean the one reading the book on the beach.. lol… 😉

Hope Irene hasn’t affected you too much, and that the predictions were overly pessimistic for this weekend…

Will try to check out all the other entries a little later…

    • Yeah, the one reading the book on the beach really does not like to have his picture taken, LOL!
Thanks Brian. So far we are okay with Irene. Lots of rain, windy conditions so far but nothing catastrophic. It is early here though; not sure when the worst of it is headed our way.

  8. I’ll take one of those lobsters, please! Lovely photo of you on the beach. Hard to pose for no one, isn’t it?

You and your sister almost have me convinced to head up to Maine next year. I hear you can photograph puffins up there, too.

    Comment by Scott Thomas Photography — August 29, 2011 @ 12:23 pm | Reply

    • Thank you Scott! Yes, it is hard to pose for a self portrait – figuring out where to place yourself to be focused I think is one of the hardest parts!
Maine is definitely worth the trip, but you’d have to go much further north than I typically go to photograph puffins (I’d love to do that too!). Very beautiful there, but quite a long drive – the Bar Harbor area is about a 6 hour drive from here in Western Mass, so tack another couple hours on for you!

  9. I’m so impressed that your family is reading and writing on vacation! Love that blue!

    Comment by Dawn — August 29, 2011 @ 2:30 pm | Reply

    • Ha! – reading is pretty much what we do when we aren’t distracted by work and electronics!

  10. Beautiful representations of summer. And I love your self-portrait. Really well done. 🙂

    Comment by Robin — August 30, 2011 @ 9:01 am | Reply

    • Thank you Robin! The self portrait took some work, that’s for sure. I must have looked just a bit nutty running back and forth to my camera while I used the self-timer!
