I’ve Got Mail!

Remember those days of AOL and logging in to your account via dial-up…bing, bing, bing, oooo…..ksssshhhhh….just waiting for those special three words: “You’ve got mail!”  I was reminded of those days when a special package arrived on my step this week.  Real mail though, not electronic, but I found myself chiming “I’ve got mail!”

Do you remember this sad tale of woe I told you last spring?  I decided to forgo the woe this spring and buy all my plants already started at the local garden center.  Only problem was, hubby still wanted his “Biker Billy Jalepenos.”  I discovered this year that Burpee sells their Biker Billy’s in plant form.  They were a little pricey for young plants, but I figured they’d be worth it.  I’ve been wondering since back in early April when I ordered them, exactly how Burpee shipped live plants.  May 13 was the ship date for my Zone 5 planting area.  The box you see above arrived via UPS.  The air-holes in the side kind of gave me chuckle, like I was receiving a breathing creature of some sort!

Turns out Burpee has this plant shipping thing down.  Inside the funny-air-holed container, I found this:

The plants were safe, snug and secure in a little greenhouse-colored plastic container.

Three Biker Billy Jalepeno plants, ready for planting next weekend!  In addition, I was able to find the other hot peppers we were looking for when I went back to the garden center.

Although the weather doesn’t have a great outlook for the week (temps around 70 but chances of thundershowers virtually every day), it appears it could be a lovely week in the yard.  Besides those peony buds I showed you a few days ago, look what is also getting ready to bloom:

The bearded irises!  I LOVE these flowers and the number of buds looks promising.  Also on the way are my crazy poppies:

I call them my “crazy” poppies for a couple reasons.  First, those buds are a little alien-looking, aren’t they? Second, once I tried to get rid of these flowers simply because they didn’t fit my general color scheme; they are bright orange in a sea of pink, lavendar and white in this particular bed.  But they kept coming back.  Now, I’ve grown to like them as the cheerful survivors they are.

It has been a busy weekend! (I’ll probably ramble on a bit more about it later in the week)  I can’t believe it is time to go back to work again tomorrow morning already.  I hope to catch up with you all very soon, and hope your weekend was awesome, even if you spent a lot of it feeling sorry for yourself! (You know who you are!)

  1. I love the fact that new buds are still popping up! That’s great that you received your plants intact in the mail, I would have had no idea how to ship a live plant! Seems like it would get tossed around, and the dirt would be all over the place!!

  2. For a couple years we ordered our tomato plants from Burpee and yes it was fun to receive them in the mail but I found that their plants didn’t do any better than ones bought locally. I’m sure that the Biker Billy jalapenos are hard to find around here. lol I really love the name! I just Googled jalapenos and found that they are a fruit, at least according to Wikipedia. I’m going to the Forest Park farmer’s market tomorrow to see if I can find veggie plants. Happy planting!

    • Ooh let me know what you find at the farmer’s market! I didn’t realize they had started again.
Yes, that is the only reason I ordered those plants is because hubby really wanted the Biker Billy ones – I don’t think anyone but Burpee has them.

  3. Wow, they do pack their plants really well! I never had AOL, but our neighbors when we lived in Dallas, did, and they had the volume up so loud that we could hear through the wall when THEY got mail! LOL

I can’t wait to see pictures of the opened iris, poppy, and whatever-else-is-growing-in-your-garden buds. Those poppies do look crazy… I never noticed that this is what their leaves look like.

    • Did you ever see the movie “You’ve Got Mail” with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks? It is really cute and took place at the height of AOL popularity.
I can’t wait to take pictures of all the flowers-to-come; the next couple weeks will have my favorites – peonies and irises- in bloom.

  4. LOVE LOVE LOEV poppies! I can’t wait to see them in bloom!!! And jalapeno’s are delicious 🙂

    • Those poppies definitely make for some interesting color. If you like jalepenos, maybe sometime you will want to try growing some Biker Billy’s. They are larger and hotter than your typical jalepeno with lots of flavor.

  5. They’re not air holes…They’re EYES !!!… so the Jalepeno’s can see where they’re going… Duh !!!… 😉

    • LOL! Why didn’t I think of that?

  6. Back when I had a vegetable garden, my favorite deliveries were from Burpee!!!! Love that company!
But then our Maple tree when bonkers and grew to shade the garden plot. No other great place to put one so, I gave up in favor of the Maple tree. Thought about container gardening this year, but am not sure I have it in me to take care of one more thing this summer. We’ll see how the next couple of weeks go.

    • I love Burpee too – it is a real breath of fresh air when Burpee catalog arrives in the middle of the winter to remind us that spring will indeed return.

  7. OH, and YES! I can still hear the dial-up and AOL mail alert in my head! We had a little Apple Macintosh and we were two of the first 200,000 members on AOL. We’ve had the same e-mail addresses for 18 years. 🙂

    • Wow, 18 years of email – isn’t that funny to think of!
