Distraction Free?

As I clicked over to read new comments on my blog today, I noticed an interesting WordPress announcement.  You know those hyperlinks that show up on your dashboard, often announcing a brand new theme?  “Distraction Free Writing” it proclaimed!  Distraction free, really?  Was WordPress going to come to my house and take the dogs for a walk,

and drive the girls to dance class for me?

Well, of course not Karma, I thought to myself, but what exactly did they mean?  I clicked the link that led me to this post, “Now More Than Ever: Just Write”.

The post explained some new tweaks and features.  Want to go read that and come back so that I don’t have to repeat them all here?  Go ahead, go read – I’ll wait.  So here I am using the Distraction Free Writing mode on full screen.  It’s pretty cool.  I like being able to see more of my post as I write it without all the little sidebars and such.  It kind of makes me feel like I am more of a pro, rather than just little ol’ me!

Am I distraction free?  I doubt that will ever be – especially while my house contains two children, a husband, two dogs, a cat and a sink full of dirty dishes – but thanks WordPress, for making my post-writing feel a little less like I have A.D.D.

    • It is true – there is so much to distract us, not to mention laundry piles, getting ready for work, Facebook, blogging itself…. LOL

  2. How funny, Karma~~I clicked on your link and then clicked to try to download (upload?) Internet Explorer 9 but then you needed to get Windows 7 first (which you need to buy) and finally, about ten minutes later, here I am back at your site with only one question to ask. Where is the button to get “full screen”? I went lookin’ but couldn’t find. Feel like I’m asking you all sorts of questions lately!

    • I got that message about my browser being out of date too (but not the scary red message like that post mentioned!) but I ignored it. Glad I didn’t try to download IE9 because I’m working on Windows Vista, not 7. Anyway, for the “full screen” button, click “add new post” and choose to work on the visual editor in your dashboard and you’ll have all those little icons above where you type. “Full Screen” is the 2nd to last in the top row of icons; it looks like a little square with arrows pushing out the corners.
I like to answer questions and be a helpful sort if I can! 🙂

      • Thank you! You were extremely helpful. I did it today. 🙂 It’s fun to learn new things.

  3. This must be if you’re based on wordpress.com, since my dashboard looks the same. I suspect though that when my website comes up for renewal again, I won’t and I will migrate to wordpress.
As to being distraction free? Never, not as long as there’s a world out there.

    • Are you self-hosted Carol? I’ve sometimes wondered if what the benefits of self-hosting are.

  4. Saw the WP announcement, read the post but haven’t tried it yet. Sounds promising but I never had an issue with the old way. Enjoy your distraction free writing and if you buy a really good headset, all those other distractions go away too…until you take them off. 😉

    • No, I’ve never had much of an issue with the old way, except when I want to go back and try to insert something after I’ve added a photo. Sometimes toggling around the addition could be a pain. And the HTML mode was a bit irritating to sometimes when trying to scroll to the bottom of the writing, it often jumped back to the top for no reason. So far, full screen seems to not have these issues.

  5. So THAT’s what happened to the dashboard!! I thought I messed up the settings because the font was a bit smaller than the last time.
And yeah, would be nice to have someone do the dishes for me… and cook dinner before they do the dishes. Oh, and there’s the laundry, too…. (I can dream, right?)

    • It is always nice to dream, Michaela! Glad I could be of help in solving one little mystery of your day! 🙂

      • My daughter has a t-shirt that reads, “I don’t have A.D.D…..ooh look! a bunny!”

  7. That’s pretty cool. I’m on WordPres but I never see these things…maybe because I’m with a different server? Who knows…but it does seem cool to have a bigger writing space..rather than the little box that you scroll up and down in.

    • I didn’t realize you were actually on WordPress with “interspike” in your address. I don’t know how these things work. 🙂

  8. Yes distraction free writing would be nice, I have to stay up late if I want to work on my blog or book writing.
