Bird Feeder Antics and Excellent Treats

First thing I saw when I wandered down the hall this morning were some acrobatics being performed on the bird seed bell:

He reaches up for more seed:

And then hangs upside down to eat them!

I had many of the birds I’ve already shown you pictures of this week, as well as a couple of new comers, also crowding the feeders this morning.

I think this is a white-breasted nuthatch:

The chickadees returned too.  In this photo, there is a black-capped chickadee on the left, but I’m not sure about the bird on the right.  It looks like a chickadee, but I’m not sure what type.  I’d love it if you might be able to let me know in the comments:

Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal did make a brief appearance this morning as well, but I was either too quick or too slow to get a picture, depending on how you look at it.  I saw Mrs. Cardinal out of the corner of my eye, and quickly grabbed my camera figuring Mr. was probably close by as well.  However, I think my quick movement in the window spooked them and they took off before I could get the picture.

The squirrels and birds were not the only ones to have excellent treats (to steal a term from Gerry Sell over on Torch Lake) this morning.  I recently discovered Dunkin Donuts has new chocolate lovers’ donuts for February.  These required investigation:

New DD donuts for February

(Sorry I didn’t think to take the picture before I had a bite!)

Top left: Reverse Boston Creme – white frosted chocolate donut with chocolate creme

Top right: Cocoa puff – sugar dusted chocolate donut with chocolate creme

Bottom right: Cocoa confetti (without the confetti) – chocolate donut glazed, normally with sprinkles.  Different from usual very heavy chocolate cake donut; it was light and fluffy, as were the other two new chocolate ones.

Bottom left: Cupid’s Choice – heart-shaped, filled with vanilla creme and decorated with pink icing and Valentine sprinkles.  My Sarah is not a big chocolate donut fan, so I thought she would prefer those.

Quite delicious!  I think my waistline would prefer I stay out of Dunkin Donuts this month.  My mouth disagrees.

  1. LOL That squirrel is too funny! 🙂
I took pictures of a squirrel yesterday, too, AND a cardinal!!

Those donuts (the CHOCOCOLARTE ones! Sarah can keep the other ones ;-)) look to die for! Good thing we just got back from the store… had I seen those before we went, no amount of willpower could have kept all kinds of things with chocolate out of the cart!

    • Ooh, will you be posting your cardinal picture?
Do you have Dunkin Donuts in Texas? Krispy Kremes seem to be more popular down south.

      • Of course I will post it! 🙂 Not sure when, but probably soon… within the next two weeks.
We do have Dunkin Donuts, but the closest one is about 8 miles away, and I never go that direction. The nearest Krispy Kreme is even further away (18 miles!!), but we can get them at our local Super Target.

  2. The squirrel shots are great (and funny!). Persistent little creatures, aren’t they?

As for the donuts, I’m pretty sure I just gained a few pounds looking at them. 😉

    • Thanks Robin. Persistent indeed. He ended up knocking the birdseed bell down at one point yesterday.
I’d say you have no worries about gaining weight with all your cross-country skiing!

  4. Funny squirrels! Stella’s new game is to sit at the window looking for them and then to whine until I let her out to chase. They always get away and I think they even know the invisible fence line. Definitely have to take a trip to Dunkin Donuts!

    • Teddy constantly shoots off the deck in pursuit of squirrels, but there’s always a tree that allows the squirrel to escape.
The girls are already requesting more DD visits this month in case they don’t make those donuts any more after February.

  5. Lovely shots! I saw a couple chasing each other round a huge chestnut tree trunk yesterday, they are so fast I could hardly get my camera in my hand before they were gone! Just found your blog. Lovely!!

    • Hello Lynne and welcome! Thank you very much for the kind comment. I had a little look-see over at your place today too.

  6. DH just went to DD and came back with the same assortment! The Cocoa puff is now my absolute favorite and I see no reason why they shouldn’t have that year round.

    • I ate a cocoa puff one this morning and I stand corrected! It actually has white filling, not chocolate, but is still yummy!

      • It’s awesome! It’s almost like a marshmallow type filling, but not quite. Jennifer would totally hate it! It reminds me of a chocolate roll up cake my dad used to get at the bakery often when we were kids.

      • Barf.

      • Yeah, well, you are lacking the donut gene anyway! 😛

  7. Boy – those squirrels are relentless!! They will do almost ANYTHING to steal food! Those doughnuts look awesome, and I think that having taken a photo AFTER the first bite was the right thing to do! 🙂

    • First bite? Um…er…more like after the first whole donut, LOL!

  8. I never tire of watching critter antics! They delight and amuse!

You are BAD to post those donut photos! Can’t recall the last time I had a DD donut…used to love the marble cruellers…thighs growing just thinking about it! 🙂

    • Oh, and I think your mystery bird is a Mountain Chickadee… 🙂

      Comment by milkayphoto — February 8, 2011 @ 4:27 pm | Reply

      • I wondered about the mountain chickadee myself, but it didn’t seem to be quite matching any of the chickadee pictures I saw. I guess I can be satisfied with plain ol’ chickadee.

    • I hadn’t indulged in DD donuts in a while myself, but these chocolate month ones are worth a trip!
