Dog Days

Like everything else this summer, the dog days seem to be early too.  Usually, at least here in New England, the humid, sultry days of  summer show up around the last week of July to the first weeks of August.  For the last few weeks around here, the average temperature  has been human body temperature and the humidity level has been pea soup.

Daphne here shows the average activity level that anyone has been feeling up to performing.  I took advantage of the opportunity to practice focusing on a sedentary object at different zoom levels.

Doesn’t she look soft and fluffy?  I think I’m seeing new levels of clarity with my Rebel buddy.

“It’s getting a little too hot out here, Mom.  Let’s go back inside so I can lay on an air conditioning vent.”

Okay, Daph.  Whatever you think is best.

  1. Awww, Daphne! So pretty.

    • And much easier to practice on!

  2. Good dog, Daph. She looks fluffy and soft and clean–the polar opposite of the Cowboy. I’ll bet she doesn’t snore, either.

The worst of our heat wave seems to have moved on, but it’s still muggy. I did laundry last Wednesday, for heaven’s sake, and the jeans are still dampish. Still, bless the rain. The earth has been thirsty.

    • Today is the first morning in a while I’ve been able to poke my head outside and not feel like I’m sticking it into a pot of soup!

Daphne looks clean because she has gotten lazy! She hardly ever wishes to get up and play. She lets Teddy do it all for her. Not exactly what I was hoping for when we got a 2nd dog.

    • Thank you! I sat on the steps of the deck to take these, so I was down at her level.

  4. The weather is about the same here, but more fever-like temps.

In your shots, you can see how lighting affects your subject…. the last one is perfect, because there are no harsh shadows.

    • I noticed that lack of shadows. I can’t remember if I did something different with the camera or if a cloud happened to pass by at that moment. I guess I could go check the EXIF data, couldn’t I?

  5. These are sweet shots Karma! I love how you got down on her level. 🙂 And I agree with Daily about the light…beautiful.

Can I make one very small suggestion based on something I’ve been working very hard on myself lately? Watch your lines in the background to make them perfectly horizontal. Does your new camera’s viewfinder have gridlines? My d90 does where my d40 didn’t and it’s been extremely helpful in keeping my lines straight. If you want your lines at an angle, make it really dramatic so it’s obviously intentional. This was a huge focus for me in our shore trip, especially with the horizon visible in so many shots. I was pleased to come home to very few shots straighten in post. 🙂

  6. Good question on the gridlines, KD. I know my old camera had them in the LCD. I think this camera has them when you use the live view; I don’t know about the viewfinder. Thanks for the tip and I will check it out.

  7. Karma, I could almost smell dog-smell looking at these pictures. Although Daph looks so soft and cuddly that she probably doesn’t smell at all. That part was probably imagination from past encounters with other dogs. For sure. Stay cool!

    • I wouldn’t be all that suprised if you did get a little whiff-o-dog smell! No matter how often we wash them, I’m always surprised how quickly they go back to smelling like a dog! 😉

  8. Awwwww, what a pretty dog!

I hear ya about the heat! Poor Cleo (our cat) has been miserable. When it is really hot, she spends the day stretched out on our bed with the fan blowing on her (no real AC here). She is loving the cooler weather today!

Now normally I’d agree with keeping lines horizontal and such but I actually like the slight angles in these shots. I also like the shadows – it provides depth. (For me, the last shot is a little flat).

    • Well, I went looking for something about gridlines in my manual, and no avail. Looks like I’ll be eye-balling it or fixing it in PSE for the foreseeable future as far as dramatic lines go. I liked the shadows in the shadowy spots, and I also liked the last shot for showing true golden retriever gold. Something for everyone! 🙂 Well, maybe not for cat people…. 😉

  9. […] up this month and I’ll be 9 years old!  Mom wrote about the dogs here, here, here, here and here! I’m glad she’s giving this elder a little respect.  I thought I deserved the chance […]
