As Summer Wears On

Hard to believe it is nearly August.  Summer is passing too quickly!  A friend posted this on Facebook recently and I couldn’t agree more:

Four weeks from today I will be back in school, so I’m trying to remind myself to enjoy every moment.  Here are some moments I’ve recently enjoyed:

We celebrated my younger daughter’s 15th birthday with family and friends.  Her actual birthday is this Thursday, so I can’t help thinking about how 15 years ago at this time I was so huge and uncomfortable.  It was a nasty hot summer – kind of like how it has been around here recently – and nothing I did seemed to feel better.  15 years ago!  Wow!

Then:

And now:

Sarah1

We got some much needed rain this past weekend – unfortunately during Sarah’s birthday party.  I think the absolute heaviest was exactly when my husband was cooking at the grill:

Police department issued rain gear came in really handy!  Photo credit to Meghan and her iPod – she was more on the ball that I was.

In the quiet moments between shopping and cleaning and otherwise preparing for the party, the butterfly bushes provided more photography opportunities.  A couple of yellow tiger swallowtails have been happily cavorting:

yellow swallowtail 2

yellow swallowtail 3

I found this species very interesting too:
Butterfly Bush collie

I think its Latin name is “collius buddlejollius”   ;-) (okay who remembers that obscure reference from an earlier post?)

July has been pretty full of good summer fun – check my archives if you’d like to see what I’ve been up to – and August has plenty more to offer.  Meghan is going to have her senior portraits taken next week (YIKES!  I’m having a really hard time wrapping my head around the fact that my older daughter will be a senior in high school in 4 weeks!  How the heck did that happen?) and our family vacation to Maine comes up in less than 2 weeks.  And don’t forget – the “Ends of the Earth” photo hunt is in August too.

  2. Summer ALWAYS passes too quickly!! Seems like it was just yesterday that I celebrated the last day of school…and in a few short weeks it will be back to carting the kids back and forth to school and I’m already dreading it :-P And school supply shopping!!!!!
I’ve seen one of those butterflies flutter around my yard, too (that was back in June I think) but it would never sit long enough for me to sneak up on it for a picture (how rude!!)

    Happy Birthday to Meghan! :-)

    • Oops, SARAH!!!
I read “Meghan and her iPod”…….hey, it’s early, I had a little too much wine last night, and VERY interrupted sleep….AND up too early! I’m not quite awake yet. :-P

    • Isn’t it crazy how much school supply shopping costs?!? I just love the laid-back days of summer, and I too, am not looking forward to all the driving that comes with the school year.
You need a butterfly bush to get them to sit still!

  3. Summer goes by way too fast…especially when you know snow is in the future. Your husband deserves an award for cooking in that downpour.

    • I agree – on both thoughts! Thanks Karen.

  4. Now THAT is a dedicated father – grilling even out in the rain (Happy Birthday to Sarah)!! I know what you mean about time going by fast – but since I don’t get summers off, it’s the whole YEAR that goes by fast for me! My little one is going to start preschool in the Fall, and I’m not sure if I’m ready for that yet…. he’s supposed to be my baby!! I’m still thinking about what I want to do for the photo challenge…. I don’t want to miss this one, I think it will be fun!!

    • How do you think I feel about my “baby” turning 15??? ;-) All the more reason for us to take those chances to do something that makes us happy! I do hope you participate in the new photo hunt – I think it will turn out to be very interesting!

  5. Nooooooooooo, it CAN’T already be August!!!! July FLEW by. I wish our summers lasted longer. Sigh.

The rain was pretty INSANE this past weekend. Hubby is a trooper! Jim grilled out in the rain as well. Thank goodness for husbands, right? ;-)

Despite the rain, I bet Sarah had an amazing birthday. You wouldn’t have it any other way.

Looking forward to the nice weather coming up this weekend. Looks like we have a few rainy days to get through but that will all be a distant memory once it is hot again and the pool is our oasis.

Daphne is certainly enjoying the butterfly bush! My ‘pink delight’ is in bloom now as well. Now, wouldn’t it be nice if the hummingbird decided to stop by? ;-)

    • Yes, Sarah had a great time despite the weather. We really haven’t had much rain since except for a sprinkle here and there. That’s actually Teddy in the butterfly bush! ;-) Daphne is our golden retriever. I’ve had what I believe to be a young hummingbird all over the butterfly bush lately, just haven’t had the camera at the ready. That always seems to be the way.
      Thanks Tracy.

  6. I love being retired. Time does not have the same limitations. I don’t live by the “July-August” summer clock. I don’t look forward to weekends. I look forward to every day.

I do envy you those butterflies though …

    • Looking forward to every day! That is perfect, the way to live.
      Thanks Sybil.

  7. Yep, time is a’passin’ til the school year starts again, Ms. Karma. Our school is all topsy-turvey right now with drywall dust and carpenters. It’s hard to work in there. They’ve moved my desk into the library but I can’t find a darn thing. Enough about school, though. Happy Birthday to Sarah! Happy butterflies to you! And I smiled at your husband in his policeman rain suit.

    • August 27th is our return date, so I’m trying to make the best of things. A week from tomorrow we leave for Maine. When we return, we’ll have 1 week left before it is time to go back. August is going to fly by!
That rain jacket has come in handy over the years for various purposes!
      Thanks Kathy.

    • We had a system: he passed the plates of cooked food to me from the grill while I held an umbrella! Luckily, as you can see in that photo, the grill isn’t far from the door!
      Thanks, Brian.

  9. FOUR weeks?? Wow. It has gone by quickly. It seems like you just started your summer break. I think children tend to grow up the same way. It seems like it was just yesterday… and then they’re going to college, getting married, having children of their own.

Your butterflies are beautiful. I love the rain gear. And collius buddlejollius is just too cute for words. :)

    • 3 weeks now that I am getting around to replying to you, lol! The rain gear was a hoot, but it definitely got the job done. Thanks very much Robin.
